Senior Structural Design Engineer (Water)
Location: Warrington or Bristol
What you’ll be doing:
As a Senior Structural Design Engineer, you’ll play a key role in delivering high-quality, compliant designs within the water and wastewater sector, working closely with Principal Engineers, Design Leads, and Managers. This hands-on technical role may also include line management responsibilities and requires strong design delivery skills. You’ll contribute to innovation, design integration, engineering governance, procurement, and site support, while also mentoring junior engineers and supporting knowledge sharing and professional development across the team.
In this role, you will:
Deliver structural designs for water/wastewater projects as part of a growing team
Review schemes, provide early-stage input, and produce reports, calculations, and outline drawings
Carry out detailed design in reinforced concrete and steel for both above- and below-ground structures
Design modifications to existing assets at treatment plants and other sites
Mentor junior engineers and provide technical guidance
Produce designs with a focus on reducing carbon footprint
Support planning, costing, and programming with the management team
Collaborate across disciplines and assist the construction team
Primarily work within the water sector, with opportunities to support temporary works
Attend site visits, assess existing structures, and compile reports
Review structural calculations from third parties
Requirements
5+ years of experience in structural engineering, ideally within the water/wastewater sector
Strong expertise in reinforced concrete design for structures such as retaining walls, pumping stations, reservoirs, and foundations
In-depth knowledge of British Standards and Eurocodes, particularly BS EN 1992 (Eurocode 2)
Proven experience in both new build design and structural assessments of existing assets
Proficient in structural analysis software such as STAAD.Pro (RC circular tanks), Strand7 (FEA), and TEKLA TEDDS or similar
Skilled in producing and reviewing structural calculations, specifications, and reports
Excellent communication, organisational, and collaboration abilities
Experience with major clients (e.g., Severn Trent, Scottish Water, Thames Water) but not essential
Able to perform structural analyses and calculations for water-related projects
Comfortable engaging with clients to understand technical needs and develop effective solutions
Experienced in coordinating with suppliers, sub-contractors, and in-house teams
Attendance at design, progress, and site meetings as required
