Job Title\n\nSpecial Educational Needs (SEN) Teacher\n\nResponsible to\n\nHeadteacher / SENCO / Head of Inclusion\n\nJob Purpose\n\nTo plan, deliver, and assess high-quality teaching and learning for pupils with special educational needs, ensuring they can access the curriculum, make progress, and achieve their full potential in a supportive and inclusive environment.\n\nKey Responsibilities\n\nTeaching and Learning\n\nPlan and deliver differentiated lessons tailored to meet a range of special educational needs, including autism, ADHD, learning difficulties, and social, emotional, and mental health needs.\n\nAdapt teaching strategies, resources, and assessment methods to meet individual pupil needs.\n\nCreate a safe, structured, and inclusive learning environment that promotes engagement and positive behaviour.\n\nUse evidence-based approaches and specialist interventions to support pupil progress.\n\nAssessment and Progress\n\nAssess, monitor, and track pupil progress using appropriate assessment tools.\n\nDevelop, implement, and review Individual Education Plans (IEPs) and contribute to Education, Health and Care Plans (EHCPs).\n\nSet clear targets and evaluate the impact of interventions.\n\nMaintain accurate records of pupil progress and support.\n\nCollaboration and Communication\n\nWork closely with the SENCO, teaching assistants, and other professionals to provide consistent support.\n\nLiaise with parents/carers to share progress, strategies, and concerns.\n\nWork with external agencies such as educational psychologists, therapists, and support services.\n\nBehaviour and Wellbeing\n\nSupport pupils’ emotional wellbeing, social development, and self-regulation.\n\nImplement positive behaviour strategies in line with school policies.\n\nPromote independence, resilience, and confidence in pupils.\n\nProfessional Responsibilities\n\nContribute to the wider life of the school and inclusive practice.\n\nParticipate in training, professional development, and staff meetings.\n\nFollow safeguarding, health and safety, and confidentiality policies at all times.\n\nUphold professional standards and demonstrate a commitment to equality and inclusion.\n\nPerson Specification\n\nEssential\n\nQualified Teacher Status (QTS) or equivalent.\n\nExperience teaching pupils with special educational needs.\n\nStrong knowledge of SEND legislation and inclusive teaching practices.\n\nAbility to differentiate effectively and adapt teaching approaches.\n\nExcellent communication and teamwork skills.\n\nDesirable\n\nSEN qualification or postgraduate training in special education.\n\nExperience working with EHCPs and multi-agency professionals.\n\nKnowledge of specific needs such as autism, speech and language difficulties, or SEMH.\n\nWorking Conditions\n\nFull-time or part-time, term-time.\n\nMay involve working in specialist provisions or small group settings
