Principal Primary Design Engineer (HV Substations)

Location: Manchester (Hybrid)

Overview

Step into a principal-level engineering role with real technical ownership in the growing power sector. If you have strong experience in primary design for HV or EHV substations (11kV-132kV and above), this is an excellent opportunity to guide design work on critical transmission and distribution projects within a collaborative, technically focused team.

Key Responsibilities

- Produce detailed primary designs for HV/EHV substations

- Develop layout drawings, schematics, and technical specifications

- Design electrical plant including switchgear, transformers, and associated equipment

- Ensure all designs comply with safety, quality, and industry standards

- Support design reviews and manage technical approvals

- Coordinate with multidisciplinary teams on projects

- Contribute to continuous improvement and the adoption of engineering best practices

Requirements

- Demonstrable experience in primary design for HV/EHV substations

- Excellent understanding of substation layouts and electrical plant

- HNC / HND / Degree in Electrical Engineering

- Exposure to transmission or distribution projects

- Knowledge of UK standards and design practices

- Strong technical, communication, and problem-solving skills
