Mechanical Design Engineer (Mid-Level)\nLocation: Birmingham, United Kingdom\nContract: 12-month contract, Outside IR35\nRate: £20–£30 per hour\n\nAbout the Role\n\nWe are seeking a skilled Mid-Level Mechanical Design Engineer to support the development of mechanical systems for themed attractions, immersive experiences, show action equipment, interactives, and bespoke engineered solutions. The successful candidate will collaborate closely with design, engineering, fabrication, and project management teams to deliver safe, innovative, and production-ready mechanical systems that align with both creative and operational requirements.\n\nKey Responsibilities\n\n * \n\n Develop mechanical concepts and detailed designs for show action equipment, animated features, special effects, mechanisms, and themed components.\n\n * \n\n Produce high-quality 3D models, assemblies, detailed 2D drawings, tolerance analyses, and engineering documentation.\n\n * \n\n Conduct engineering calculations including stress analysis, load assessments, material sizing, motion studies, and kinematic evaluations.\n\n * \n\n Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to integrate mechanical systems with electrical, structural, scenic, and control components.\n\n * \n\n Work with fabrication teams to ensure designs are manufacturable, cost-effective, and compatible with workshop capabilities.\n\n * \n\n Support prototype builds, mechanical testing, FATs, and system refinement.\n\n * \n\n Assist with on-site installation, commissioning, alignment, and troubleshooting of mechanical systems.\n\n * \n\n Identify mechanical risks and provide safe, compliant engineering solutions.\n\n * \n\n Prepare BOMs, specification sheets, technical reports, assembly instructions, and maintenance documentation.\n\n * \n\n Ensure all designs comply with UK/European mechanical, safety, and certification standards, including CE/UKCA requirements.\n\nTechnical & Professional Requirements\n\n * \n\n 3–5 years of experience in mechanical design within, automation, machinery, special effects, robotics, creative fabrication, or similar sectors.\n\n * \n\n Strong proficiency in CAD and simulation software (SolidWorks ; Inventor or similar accepted).\n\n * \n\n Good understanding of manufacturing processes including metal fabrication, machining, welding, joinery, plastics, pneumatics, and mechanical assembly.\n\n * \n\n Experience designing mechanisms, linkages, motion systems, and moving scenic elements.\n\n * \n\n Solid knowledge of materials, tolerancing, GD&T, fastener standards, bearings, actuators, linear motion systems, and safety mechanisms.\n\n * \n\n Ability to create clear, production-ready engineering drawings and fabrication packs.\n\n * \n\n Experience with FEA tools and motion analysis is advantageous.\n\n * \n\n Excellent communication skills and ability to work collaboratively in fast-paced project environments.\n\n * \n\n Strong understanding of ISO standards, UKCA/CE requirements, machinery directive, and relevant safety regulations
