Higher Level Teaching Assistant – SEND Focus | Hertsmere, Hertfordshire
Are you an experienced Teaching Assistant ready to take the next step in your career, or currently working towards HLTA status? Teach Now is working with a vibrant, ambitious secondary school in Hertsmere, Hertfordshire to recruit a dedicated Higher Level Teaching Assistant (HLTA) to support students with Special Educational Needs across Key Stages 3, 4 and 5, starting January 2026.
This full-time, temporary role is term-time only (8:30am–3:30pm) and offers a rewarding opportunity to make a genuine difference to young people who need consistent, skilled and compassionate support to thrive both academically and emotionally.
You will play a key role within the SEND and pastoral teams, working closely with teachers, the SENDCo and external professionals to remove barriers to learning and promote positive outcomes. This is far more than a classroom support role – you will be a mentor, advocate and role model for students who benefit from strong relationships and structured guidance.
Key responsibilities include:
• Delivering targeted interventions and supporting differentiated learning activities
• Providing pastoral and emotional support to SEN pupils throughout the school day
• Supporting behaviour, routines and transitions to create a safe, inclusive environment
• Liaising with parents, staff and external agencies to support holistic pupil development
• Contributing to planning, assessment and review of pupil progress
We are looking for someone who:
• Has experience supporting young people with SEN in a secondary setting
• Is a qualified HLTA or actively working towards HLTA status
• Holds GCSEs (Grade 4/C or above) in English and Maths
• Is calm, resilient, empathetic and committed to safeguarding and inclusion
• Communicates confidently and works well as part of a professional team
