We are seeking an experienced Waste Manager to lead our Trust-wide waste management and reduction strategy. The Waste Manager will be responsible for the strategic and operational management of all waste streams across the Trust, ensuring full compliance with environmental legislation, waste regulations, and NHS standards. This role will play a key part in driving innovation in waste reduction, sustainability, and circular economy practices across clinical and non‑clinical areas. Job Types: Full-time, Fixed term contract Pay: £32.06 per hour (negotiable) Key Responsibilities
Lead and manage the Trust’s Waste Management Service, ensuring safe, compliant, and cost‑effective handling, storage, transport, and disposal of all waste streams. Develop and implement a Trust‑wide Waste Management Strategy aligned with NHS England’s sustainability objectives and the Trust’s Green Plan. Provide expert advice on waste legislation, policy, and best practice to clinical and non‑clinical teams. Monitor contractor performance and manage waste service contracts, ensuring value for money and compliance with statutory and Trust requirements. Lead audits, inspections, and risk assessments of waste management systems and facilities. Liaise with regulatory bodies (e.g. Environment Agency, NHS England, local authorities) to ensure full legal and policy compliance. Deliver training, awareness, and engagement programmes to promote best practice in waste segregation and reduction. Analyse data and produce regular reports on waste volumes, costs, and environmental performance indicators. Manage and develop a team of waste and sustainability staff to deliver high‑quality, customer‑focused services.
Person Specification
Degree or equivalent qualification in Environmental Management, Waste Management, or related discipline. Significant experience in waste management at a senior level, ideally within the NHS or a complex public sector organisation. In‑depth knowledge of UK waste legislation, environmental compliance, and waste segregation requirements. Proven leadership, contract management, and budget management experience. Strong data analysis, reporting, and IT skills. Excellent communication, influencing, and stakeholder engagement skills. Chartered Waste Manager (CIWM) or equivalent professional membership. Experience developing sustainability or carbon reduction initiatives. Postgraduate qualification in environmental or sustainability management.
