Shift Pattern: Night Shift (on‑site)
About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Night Shift Warehouse Team Leader to take ownership of overnight operations within our high‑volume distribution facility in Hull. This is a critical leadership role requiring a confident, resilient manager who is comfortable making people‑management and HR‑related decisions independently due to limited overnight support.
You will lead a team of approximately 25 warehouse operatives, acting as the senior on‑shift contact for operational delivery, Health & Safety, staffing, and employee issues. This role is ideal for someone with strong hands‑on experience managing performance, sickness, conduct, and staffing levels in a warehouse or logistics environment.
Key Responsibilities
Operational Leadership
Lead night‑shift warehouse activity to ensure productivity, quality, and accuracy targets are achieved Plan workloads and staffing levels to meet daily volume requirements Monitor operational performance and take corrective action where required Escalate risks, delays, or service issues appropriately
People Management & HR Responsibility
Take full responsibility for day‑to‑day people management on the night shift Manage staffing levels, including allocation of labour, skill coverage, and absence cover Proactively manage sickness absence, lateness, and attendance issues in line with company policy Conduct performance management conversations, including informal coaching and formal improvement actions Handle disciplinary matters, including fact‑finding, investigations, note‑taking, and initial hearing stages where required Address conduct and behavioural issues promptly and professionally Ensure consistent, fair, and compliant application of HR policies in the absence of immediate HR support Maintain accurate records of absences, performance issues, and disciplinary actions Liaise with HR during day shifts to ensure follow‑up actions are completed
Health & Safety
Maintain full accountability for Health & Safety standards during night operations Conduct regular safety checks and ensure safe systems of work are followed Respond to accidents, incidents, and near‑misses, taking immediate action where required Ensure accurate reporting and documentation of H&S matters
Team Engagement & Development
Lead by example, setting clear standards for behaviour, attendance, and performance Deliver shift briefings, toolbox talks, and effective handovers Coach, train, and develop team members to improve engagement and capability Support new starters, temporary staff, and agency workers during night shifts
Collaboration & Reporting
Work closely with day‑shift leadership to ensure continuity across the operation Provide detailed shift handovers covering staffing, performance, incidents, and HR matters Contribute ideas to improve efficiency, engagement, and safety
Experience & Skills Required
Essential
Proven experience as a Warehouse Team Leader or Supervisor in a fast‑paced distribution or logistics environment Strong hands‑on experience managing people, including: Staffing and labour allocation Sickness and absence management Performance management and capability concerns Disciplinary processes and conduct issues Confidence operating with limited HR or senior management support, particularly on night shifts Solid working knowledge of warehouse operations and procedures Strong understanding of Health & Safety requirements within a warehouse environment Excellent communication skills, with the ability to handle sensitive conversations professionally Strong organisational skills and attention to detail Ability to prioritise and make sound decisions under pressure Basic IT skills (WMS, reporting tools, Microsoft Office)
Desirable
Experience leading night‑shift teams Previous involvement in formal investigations or disciplinary hearings Experience managing agency or temporary labour Familiarity with HR policies and employment best practice
