The role As a Trainee Patent Attorney at Adamson Jones, you will play a pivotal role in protecting the intellectual property assets of our clients. This position involves working on a broad range of technologies, assisting in the preparation and filing of patent applications, and contributing to the development of IP strategies. You will be working alongside highly qualified legal professionals both within Adamson Jones and throughout Gateley, and will be involved in direct client interactions, providing clear and concise advice on complex patent matters. This role is a gateway to becoming a fully qualified patent attorney, offering a challenging yet rewarding career path. Responsibilities
Drafting patent applications, working closely with supervising attorneys to prepare robust patent applications that meet the commercial objectives of our clients. Supporting patent prosecution, including reviewing and preparing draft responses to examination reports from patent offices. Preparing reports and proposals for clients, for example outlining options for responding to examination objections or drafting advice regarding third‑party patents. Drafting and amending patent claims, including: understanding the scope of an invention and drafting appropriate patent claim definitions; preparing amendments to patent claims in response to examiner objections. Preparing draft legal and technical arguments, including in relation to novelty and inventive step, under supervision.
We’re looking for someone who can join us in September, with in‑person interviews and a final assessment planned for early June in our Nottingham office. Qualifications
A strong academic background, a minimum 2:1 degree in a science or engineering discipline, ideally computer science, electronics, physics or a closely related field, supported by excellent A‑level results. A commitment to professional growth, with a genuine desire to excel in the field of intellectual property law and develop deep expertise over time. Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with the ability to explain complex technical concepts clearly and confidently. Professionalism, integrity and a people‑first approach – someone who represents our firm’s values in every interaction. Strong analytical and problem‑solving ability, paired with a real enthusiasm for technology, innovation and how ideas shape the future. A collaborative mindset, with the ability to work effectively both independently and as part of a supportive, multi‑disciplinary team.
