Job Title: Terminal Manager – Automotive Rail Unloading Facility
Job Summary
The Terminal Manager is responsible for overseeing all operations at an automotive rail unloading facility. This role ensures the safe, efficient, and timely unloading, inspection, storage, and distribution of vehicles. The Terminal Manager leads staff, manages logistics, enforces safety and compliance standards, and serves as the primary point of contact for customers and rail partners.
Key Responsibilities
Operations Management
Oversee daily terminal operations, including unloading and baying of vehicles
Coordinate with the railroad to manage inbound/outbound schedules and minimize dwell time
Ensure proper vehicle handling to prevent damage during unloading and transport
Monitor yard flow, inventory levels, and throughput efficiency
Staff Leadership
Supervise, train, and schedule terminal staff (yard workers, drivers, supervisors, etc.)Promote a strong safety culture and enforce company policies and procedures
Conduct performance evaluations and provide coaching and development
Safety & Compliance
Ensure compliance with OSHA, Customer, AAR, and company safety standards
Conduct daily safety meetings, audits, and incident investigations
Maintain accurate safety records and implement corrective actions
Customer & Client Relations
Serve as the primary contact for automotive clients and logistics partners
Ensure service levels meet or exceed customer expectations
Address and resolve customer concerns, claims, or service issues
Inventory & Quality Control
Oversee vehicle inspection processes for damage and documentation
Maintain accurate inventory tracking and reporting systems
Ensure timely and accurate reporting of damages, shortages, or discrepancies
Financial & Administrative Oversight
Manage terminal budgets, labor costs, and operational expenses
Optimize processes to improve efficiency and reduce costs
Qualifications
Required
High school diploma or equivalent (Bachelor’s degree )
5+ years of experience in rail, automotive logistics, or terminal/yard operations
2+ years in a supervisory or management role
Strong knowledge of safety regulations and operational best practices
Excellent leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills
Experience with automotive rail unloading or vehicle processing facilities
Familiarity with yard management systems (YMS) or inventory tracking software
Experience working with Class I railroads or logistics providers
Work Environment
Outdoor environment in a rail yard with exposure to varying weather conditions
Frequent walking, standing, and coordination of yard activities
May require extended hours, weekends, or on-call availability based on rail schedules
