Speech Language Therapist

Midlands – Wolverhampton / Birmingham / Stafford


The role

As the Speech and Language Therapist, you will:

  • Provide initial and ongoing assessment of pupils’ speech, language and social communication skills
  • Write clear, professional assessment and progress reports for reviews and EHCPs
  • Design, implement and review individual communication programmes
  • Deliver a mix of direct and indirect therapy – 1:1 and small-group interventions
  • Lead and adapt social communication groups across the school
  • Create visual supports (e.g. Social Stories, visual timetables, symbol resources)
  • Work closely with education staff to embed communication targets into the curriculum
  • Promote a “Total Communication” approach across the school
  • Provide advice, training and coaching to staff, parents and carers
  • Contribute to multi-disciplinary meetings and liaise with external professionals as needed


About you

Essential:

  • HCPC-registered Speech and Language Therapist and member of RCSLT
  • Recognised degree (or equivalent) in Speech and Language Therapy
  • Experience working with children or young people with learning disabilities and autism
  • Understanding of behaviour support, trauma and the impact of early adverse experiences on communication
  • Confident in assessing communication needs and writing therapy plans and reports
  • Strong communication, interpersonal and time-management skills
  • Comfortable working as part of a multi-disciplinary team

Desirable:

  • At least one year’s post-graduate paediatric experience with completed NQP competencies
  • Experience supporting children/young people with SEMH, PMLD or complex needs
  • Familiarity with EHCP processes and provision
  • Experience with Makaton/Signalong or other AAC approaches
  • Ability to deliver staff training on communication
