About the Company
Unitemps are currently looking for a qualified Specialist Study Skills Tutor to work with students who have Autism Spectrum Condition (ASC) at one of our partner universities in Birmingham. The successful Specialist Study Skills Tutor will provide expertise in the areas of language and study skills and Autism to help students to develop learning strategies to improve their studies. This role is part-time, you will be able to manage your own timetable depending on which days/times you would like to work.
About the Role
Experience working in a similar setting with students with ASC is essential. An ability to be sensitive to students’ needs and having an interest in and understanding of additional support needs is also very important. Tutors provide one to one assistance to students and work with an Individual Learning Plan which is bespoke to each individual student. An emphasis is placed on encouraging students to take responsibility for their own learning and to develop their skills. Specialist 1-2-1 Study Skills Tutor are facilitators, they shouldn’t act as advocates or mentors. Please note, to be considered for the role, you would need to be based locally to Birmingham and able to travel to campuses in and around the area should students request face-to-face support.
Responsibilities
- To provide one to one Specialist 1-2-1 Study Skills tuition to students with ASC enabling them to develop within higher education.
- To provide bespoke sessions according to the needs of the individual student.
- To deliver study skills tuition according to Unitemps guidelines and code of conduct.
- A flexible approach to working hours is required.
- Ability to manage paperwork effectively, i.e. completing timesheets and record of sessions.
- You will be expected to represent Unitemps in a professional manner, including adhering to both Unitemps and the universities policies regarding confidentiality and safeguarding.
Qualifications
As per the Department for Education requirements, the successful Specialist Mentor must have the relevant qualifications and training. You must have either a relevant degree in Autism or be educated to a degree level. Alternatively, if you hold a Post Graduate Certificate (PGC) in Autism or Asperger’s or hold an MA/MEd in Education (Autism or Special Educational Needs and Disability or Critical Disability Studies focusing on Autism) this will be accepted. If you do not hold a PGC or MA/MEd, you must have had a level of comprehensive training in adult autism; this includes holding the National Autistic Society 6 online Training Modules: Understanding autism, Autism and communication, Autism and sensory experience, Autism, stress and anxiety, Autism: supporting families and Autism and Girls. Applicants will also need to have completed a one-day face to face course delivered by the National Autistic Society in Autism and SPELL in higher education or other accredited training, at an HE institution or elsewhere, and accredited to at least CPD level, which must include autism in HE as its lead subject.
Required Skills
- Experience working with students in a similar role in a Higher Education setting is essential.
- Able to assess learner’s needs and devise an appropriate learning plans.
- Understands the needs, objectives and constraints of students. This includes recognising barriers to learning for students with ASC.

- Postgraduate Certificate in Education (PGCE/PgCert.ED)

Pay range and compensation package
Job Types: Part-time, Temporary Flexible hours: 10-40 per week Pay: £30.00 per hour Schedule: Monday to Friday
