Function: Design | Service Design | Public Sector Digital Delivery

Industry: Consulting | Digital Services | Government & Public Sector

Design public services that put people first. Shape systems that make a difference.

A global design-led consultancy is expanding its public sector design team and is hiring two Service Designers – one at junior level and one at mid-level – to help drive the delivery of impactful, human-centred services across central government and public health.

These roles sit within a dynamic, cross-functional team embedded in digital transformation programmes that affect millions of users. You'll collaborate with researchers, technologists, and delivery leads to reimagine public services that are inclusive, scalable, and fit for purpose.

Whether you’re just establishing your service design career or stepping into a more autonomous role, this is a chance to be part of a high-impact studio that blends strategy, design, and delivery to improve how people experience government services.

In this role, you will:

  • Scope, plan, and deliver service design activities from discovery through to delivery
  • Conduct research to uncover user needs and pain points through interviews, testing, and contextual inquiry
  • Map current and future state journeys, ecosystems, and service blueprints to inform design strategy
  • Facilitate co-creation workshops and design playback sessions with stakeholders
  • Prototype service components and experiences to test assumptions and inform iteration
  • Translate insights into actionable service improvements and communicate them effectively
  • Embed inclusive design and accessibility principles throughout the design lifecycle
  • Collaborate closely with delivery teams in agile, multi-disciplinary environments
  • (Mid-level role only) Mentor junior team members and contribute to the growth of internal service design practices

You should apply if you have:

  • Strong portfolio showing your role in designing services, journeys, or systems
  • Solid understanding of human-centred design, research synthesis, and service mapping
  • Experience working in agile delivery teams alongside engineers, researchers, and delivery managers
  • Confident communication and storytelling skills, both visual and verbal
  • Awareness of accessibility standards (e.g. WCAG) and inclusive design principles
  • For mid-level applicants: 5+ years in service design and experience working in the UK public sector or to GDS standards

Even better if you have:

  • Formal training in service design, HCI, UX, or a related discipline
  • Familiarity with GDS service standards and the public-sector digital landscape
  • Experience integrating service design into large-scale digital delivery programmes
  • Exposure to design systems, content strategy, or systems thinking

Why join?

You’ll be part of a global team that brings design thinking to some of the most complex challenges in government. With access to deep learning opportunities, inclusive networks, and major national projects, you’ll help reshape public services for the better – and grow your own practice in the process.
