VMware Engineer\n\n£525 a day (Inside IR35)\n\nManchester (2 days onsite)\n\n4 months\n\nWe are seeking a Senior VMware Engineer (Contractor) with hands-on experience provisioning and managing Linux and Windows virtual machines in enterprise VMware environments. This is a contract engagement supporting a higher education institution's virtual infrastructure modernisation and operational support initiatives.The contractor will provide advanced engineering expertise across VMware Cloud Foundation (VCF), VMware ESXi, VMware vSphere, and VMware NSX-T, ensuring stability, scalability, and performance of mission-critical academic and research systems.\n\nScope of Work\n\nProvision, configure, and manage Linux and Windows VMs in enterprise clusters.\nDeploy and manage workloads within VMware Cloud Foundation environments.\nInstall, configure, patch, and upgrade VMware ESXi hosts.\nAdminister and optimise VMware vSphere clusters, including HA, DRS, and vMotion.\nDesign and manage network virtualisation using VMware NSX-T.\nPerform VM lifecycle management (build, template creation, cloning, migration, decommissioning)\nConduct performance monitoring, capacity planning, and resource optimisation.\nSupport storage integration (SAN/NAS/vSAN) and ensure optimal IOPS performance.\nImplement and support backup, replication, and disaster recovery solutions.\nProvide advanced troubleshooting and root cause analysis.\nDocument architecture, configurations, and operational procedures\nCollaborate with infrastructure, security, networking, and research computing teams.Deliverables\n\nFully provisioned and optimised virtual machine environments.\nUpdated and documented VMware architecture diagrams and configurations.\nPerformance optimisation and capacity planning reports.·\nResolved infrastructure incidents within agreed SLAs\nKnowledge transfer documentation and handover sessions (if required at contract completion)Required Experience & Skills\n\nVMware engineering experience.\nProven track record provisioning Linux (RHEL, Ubuntu, etc.) and Windows Server VMs\nStrong hands-on expertise in VCF, ESXi, vSphere, and NSX-T.\nExperience in higher education, research institutions, or multi-tenant environments .\nSolid understanding of storage, networking, and security integration\nAutomation and scripting skills (PowerCLI, PowerShell, Bash, Python)\nExperience with vCenter administration and cluster design\nStrong troubleshooting and performance tuning capabilities.\nVMware certifications (VCP-DCV, VCAP)\nExperience with automation/orchestration (VMware Aria/vRealise, Ansible)\nHybrid cloud experience (Azure, AWS, VMware Cloud).Hays Specialist Recruitment Limited acts as an employment agency for permanent recruitment and employment business for the supply of temporary workers.
