Identifying, developing, and using best practice and standards to design services consistent with the rest of government Advocating for users and understanding user needs to design simple, effective, and accessible services Creating service maps, blueprints, and other concepts Mapping user journeys, processes, and visualising design problems Articulating and solving complex problems, from end to end and surface to core Communicating concepts to users and stakeholders Selling ideas with persuasive storytelling Experience with the GDS/GOV.UK style guide and service design standard Collaborating within a multidisciplinary team by sharing design work and participating in research
Day‑to‑Day Activities
Advocating for user‑centred design and supporting the Design community within Methods and across government Taking responsibility for own learning and development and seeking opportunities to improve knowledge and experience Providing project support and guidance to other team members in the SD community of practice Coaching and mentoring junior team members in the SD community of practice Supporting probation and annual reviews for junior team members in the SD community of practice Assisting in training and development plans alongside the Head of SD and Deputy Director of UCD Bid support to Head of SD and Deputy Director of UCD Supporting permanent staff hiring when required
Essential Skills
Demonstrable passion for service design and ability to communicate design ideas clearly Ability to explain abstract concepts to diverse audiences Understanding of how technology constraints influence design Experience running workshops and facilitating collaborative design sessions Experience participating in research activities and interpreting user research to inform design Ability to contribute to prototypes at different levels of fidelity Experience working in an agile environment
