Senior Scientist
1 Days Old
Malvern Optical are seeking a Senior Scientist with responsibility for the development, characterisation and modelling of novel electro-optical materials. Candidates should have a background in physics, materials science or a related discipline and should be able to demonstrate a theoretical understanding of the electro-magnetic spectrum (from ultraviolet to the far-infrared) and light-matter interactions. The role requires candidates to have strong computing skills and an aptitude to utilise modelling and computational software packages. It is desirable that candidates have experience in electro-magnetic field and material modelling, FDTD, computational and instrumentation software (e.g. LabView, Python, Matlab), computer vision tools, and machine learning tools (e.g. Tensorflow, PyTorch or SciKit-Learn). Other software experience such as graphical rendering packages (e.g. Unreal Engine) or basic CAD design, would be beneficial.
The successful applicant will become part of a small team of experienced scientists and engineers carrying out development of electro-optical (EO) materials, coatings and systems. The team also undertake materials characterisation and testing, including the use of microscopy, spectroscopy and measurement of optical properties, and basic environmental and durability evaluation.
In addition to R&D activities the role will involve maintaining test equipment in Malvern Optical’s laboratory, and liaising with external commercial and academic partners to leverage knowledge and facilities of other organisations. The successful candidate may also have the opportunity to participate in field trials and application testing. They will be encouraged to suggest new topic areas of work on some of our longer-term projects, and to develop proposals for new work.
Due to the varied nature of the work a practical hands-on aptitude is required alongside good academic knowledge. The successful applicant will need to show excellent time management skills and be able to work both autonomously whilst collaborating with the wider technical team.
Whilst the role is based near Pershore, the post will require the successful candidate to be willing to undertake occasional travel within the UK or abroad in support of project or business activities and to occasionally work outside of normal working hours. We encourage our technical staff to attend relevant conferences when these occur.
In return we offer a salary in the region of £35k – £55k per annum, 25 days holiday plus bank holidays (rising to 30 days after 5 years), overtime potential, death in service benefit, and a generous pension scheme with matched contributions of up to 10% of salary.
NB: Due to the nature of our business candidates must be eligible to obtain a full security clearance at the point of recruitment.
