Where in Wellcome will I be working?
You will be joining the Mental Health Innovation team within the wider Mental Health programme, reporting to a Research Lead.
The Mental Health Innovation team focuses on finding, trialling, and scaling of new and improved mental health interventions globally, spanning digital, pharmacological, and non-pharmacological approaches.
What will I be doing?
As Senior Research Manager, you will lead funding of translational research and implementation projects, scope opportunities for future research, and manage relationships with awardees and suppliers.
Key responsibilities include:
- Contributing to the leadership, development, and delivery of the Mental Health strategy, ensuring strategic objectives are met.
- Leading on scoping areas of interest, shaping, and advancing internal research and development projects.
- Identifying and managing larger projects independently, acting as the main point of contact, liaising with external stakeholders or partners for the ongoing management and conclusion of major initiatives.
- Contributing to the effective delivery of funding decisions, providing critical scientific assessment of applications, participating in decision-making reviews, and making clear recommendations to senior management.
- Ensuring a breadth and depth of knowledge of your area and the wider research and funding landscape and apply this to the review and development of Mental Health Research Programme activities, identifying suitable routes for the development and delivery of new activities and sharing knowledge and expertise to contribute to the work Research Programmes and throughout Wellcome.
- Using deep understanding of the Mental Health stakeholders to identify establish and maintain key relationships, understanding their needs and working in partnership.
- Contributing to a diverse and inclusive culture across the organisation, collaborating across departments.
We are looking for someone with significant experience of working on translational research or implementation projects related to psychological and social interventions. We are particularly looking for someone with expertise of working in low- and middle-income countries.
You will bring significant expertise in relation to at least one area of mental health science, broadly defined. Expertise need not be limited to psychology, psychiatry, or neuroscience: those with relevant expertise in a range of fields from molecular biology to social science will be considered. We would particularly welcome knowledge and expertise of clinical trials. A PhD is not essential.

- Experience of undertaking translational research projects and/or implementation science on psychological and/or social interventions for mental
- Experience of shaping and delivering research or science related programmes in an academic, industrial, clinical, funding agency or charity setting.
- Experience of research related to mental health innovation in a low- and middle-income country context.
- Experience of managing multiple projects and internal/external stakeholders.
