The Role;
As a Senior Ecologist you will lead on the design, coordination, and implementation of surveys and ecological assessments, providing expert guidance to colleagues and clients. The role includes technical leadership, project management, fieldwork oversight, data analysis, and reporting. It also involves supporting junior ecologists and contributing to the strategic growth of the avian ecology service.
Key Responsibilities;
Plan, lead, and review bird surveys, including breeding bird assessments, wintering bird counts, and migration studies
Manage multiple projects and ensure delivery on time, within scope, and to a high technical standard
Provide expert input into habitat assessments, impact evaluations, and mitigation strategies
Analyse complex ecological data and produce clear, evidence-based reports and recommendations
Liaise with clients, regulators, and stakeholders, representing the ecological team at meetings and consultations
Mentor and supervise junior staff, supporting their technical development and field training
Contribute to business development through tender writing, proposal development, and client engagement
Essential Experience and Skills;
A degree in ecology, environmental science, or a related discipline (postgraduate qualification desirable)
Extensive field experience in survey methods and species identification, with strong knowledge of UK bird species and legislation
Proven project management skills, with the ability to lead complex ecological assessments
Excellent written and verbal communication skills, with experience producing high-quality reports and client-facing documents
Familiarity with relevant planning policy, ecological legislation, and impact assessment processes (e.g. EIA, HRA)
Proficiency in GIS and ecological data analysis tools (e.g. R, QGIS, Excel)
Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel for fieldwork
Desirable
Membership of CIEEM (Associate or Full)
Protected species licences or experience with species monitoring schemes
Experience engaging with statutory bodies or conservation organisations
