Senior Development Underwriter - FI Programme Persée – London, England, United Kingdom Our Financial Institutions team is looking for a Senior Underwriter to join them in the London office. In this role you will be pivotal in driving business growth through strategic relationship building and new business development. You will be responsible for underwriting predominantly new business, leveraging your underwriting authority to make impactful decisions. This position offers a blend of underwriting expertise and sales acumen, collaborating closely with regional and product colleagues as well as internal and external business partners to capture fresh opportunities, retain valued customers, and explore innovative ventures. You will take direct ownership of broker development and management, positioning yourself as the local market expert while mentoring other team members. Travelers Europe offers flexibility for employees who wish to work on a hybrid basis, with full‑time employees working three days a week in the office and two days at home (or pro rata for part‑time employees). This policy is subject to change at the company’s discretion. Responsibilities
Underwrite and assess risk for products and accounts from assigned brokers, making appropriate decisions within own underwriting authority and providing intelligent recommendations to regional or product underwriting leadership. Underwrite complex accounts and risks, considering different approaches to maximise profitability (e.g., pricing, retention, endorsements, limits, indemnity, security). Apply TICL underwriting principles consistently. Make prompt, sound decisions within underwriting authority based on available information; negotiate terms and conditions consistent with regional or product underwriting requirements within submission timeframes. Understand and execute product segment strategies to produce budgeted results. Continuously manage book of business, maintaining quality required by regional or product underwriting strategy. Ensure accurate underwriting documentation and information in account management systems, adhering to documentation standards. Collaborate with Head Office, Risk Control, Claims, Actuarial and other organisational parts to deliver appropriate and timely underwriting service. Assure policies and accounts are effectively underwritten, handled and documented in compliance with company and regulatory standards. Develop broker/client relationships through high visibility and disciplined sales management (planning, follow‑up for visits and meetings) to support business objectives. Execute sales plans for assigned brokers in conjunction with regional sales leadership. Identify and capture new business opportunities, cross‑selling TICL products. Act as a responsible business partner with assigned brokers and clients, managing TICL interests. Maintain collaborative relationships with colleagues in other business units and regions to foster business development. Participate or lead regional and product underwriting or sales meetings with your team. Demonstrate superior customer service standards (consistency, quick response, product knowledge). Help achieve underwriting, sales, and production goals and understand strategic objectives. Focus on meeting customer expectations for response time and product knowledge. Work strategically and tactically with brokers to ensure they understand appropriate levels of coverage. Perform other duties as assigned.
Qualifications
University degree and/or Chartered Insurance Institute (CII) Advanced Certification or Diploma. General knowledge of industry business operations, critical business issues and financial drivers affecting the Line of Business. Local insurance marketplace knowledge and ability to use insight to the Company’s advantage. Continuous pursuit of market insight to support less experienced employees. Relationship‑management skills: building, fostering and maintaining productive relationships or alliances. Business perspective: applying knowledge of internal and external factors that impact the Lloyd’s Market. Analytical thinking/financial acumen: identifying problems or opportunities, analyzing and synthesizing information, exploring alternatives for sound decisions. Understanding of finance and accounting principles to gauge impact of underwriting decisions on overall profitability. Product/technical proficiency commensurate with underwriting authority. Make sound quoting and pricing decisions that serve the Company’s best interests.
Must‑Haves
Previous experience underwriting management liability, professional indemnity or financial institutions.
