Senior Data Engineer\nLocation: Bristol, Swansea, Leeds, Nottingham, Newcastle, Oldham, Birmingham and Yeading.\nSalary: Up to £58,997\nJob summary\nA DVSA Senior Data engineer is responsible for the design and implementation of numerous complex data flows to connect operational systems, data for analytics and BI systems.\nDVSA Senior Data Engineers:\n * lead the build of data streaming systems\n * optimize the code to ensure processes perform optimally\n * lead work on database management\n * recognize and share opportunities to re-use existing data flows\n * coordinate project teams and set best practice and standards\n * apply knowledge of systems integration to their work\nJoining our department comes with many benefits, including:\n * Employer pension contribution of 28.97% of your salary.\n * 25 days annual leave, increasing by 1 day each year of service (up to a maximum of 30 days annual leave), plus 8 bank holidays a privilege day for the King’s birthday\n * Flexible working options where we encourage a great work-life balance.\nJob description\nBuild, maintain and optimise scalable, secure data pipelines and platforms that enable analytics, reporting and operational data products across government. Work with data architects, analysts and stakeholders to translate requirements into robust ETL/streaming solutions, ensure data quality and compliance with standards, and drive automation and reuse to support evidence‑based policy and service delivery.\nYour responsibilities will include, but aren’t limited to:\nDesign, build and operate ETL and streaming pipelines for large, varied datasets.\nImplement and enforce data modelling, lineage and quality standards.\nOptimise storage, processing and query performance on cloud/on‑prem platforms.\nIntegrate data sources via APIs, batch and real‑time ingestion methods.\nAutomate deployment, testing and monitoring using CI/CD and observability tools.\nCollaborate with analysts, data scientists and product teams to deliver reusable data products.\nEnsure data security, access controls and compliance with government data standards.\nMentor junior engineers and contribute to engineering best practices and documentation.\nFor further information on the role, please read the attached role profile. This job advert will detail exactly what will be assessed during the recruitment process.\nPerson specification\nTo be successful in this role you will need to have the following experience:\nAWS Certified Cloud Practitioner or equivalent experience.\nExpertise in integrating and separating data feeds to map, produce, transform, and test new data products at an enterprise level (Integrates and separates data feeds to map, produce, transform, and test new data products.\nExperience in establishing enterprise-scale data integration procedures across the data development lifecycle and ensuring that teams adhere to these. Managing resources to ensure that data services work effectively at an enterprise level.\nExpertise in exposing data from systems, linking data from multiple systems and delivering streaming services.\nDesigning, writing, and iterating code from prototype to production ready. Understands security, accessibility, and version control.
