Secondary SEN Teacher (SLCN) - Richmond Long-Term Position | Immediate Start Available Location: Richmond, South West London Salary: £200-£265 per day, dependent on experience
We are delighted to announce an exciting opportunity for a passionate and committed SEN Teacher to join an Outstanding co-educational secondary school specialising in Speech, Language and Communication Needs (SLCN) in the London Borough of Richmond. This is a school with a strong commitment to inclusive, communication-friendly education and the personal development of every pupil, a place where teachers are genuinely valued, supported by a dedicated and approachable leadership team, and empowered to make a real and lasting difference.
This is a long-term ongoing position, ideal for an experienced SEN Teacher with a background in SLCN and/or autism who is looking to commit to a specialist school community and grow professionally within a truly collaborative and multidisciplinary environment.
About the Role:
As a Secondary SEN Teacher, you will deliver engaging, differentiated and well-structured lessons to pupils with Speech, Language and Communication Needs across KS3 and KS4, many of whom also present with autism spectrum conditions. This is a general SEN Teacher role rather than a subject specialist position, meaning your focus will be on meeting the holistic communication, learning and developmental needs of your pupils rather than delivering a single curriculum subject.
You will work closely with the SENCO, speech and language therapists, occupational therapists and a wider multidisciplinary team, using a Total Communication approach, combining speech, signing, symbols and AAC devices, to ensure every pupil has the tools they need to access learning and thrive. Class sizes are small, allowing for a genuinely personalised and impactful teaching experience.
Key Responsibilities:
- Plan and deliver engaging, differentiated lessons tailored to the needs of pupils with SLCN and autism across KS3 and KS4 - Implement a Total Communication approach, utilising speech, signing, symbols and AAC devices to support pupils' communication and learning - Work collaboratively with the SENCO, speech and language therapists, occupational therapists and the wider MDT to implement EHCPs and individual support plans - Use specialist SLCN and autism-friendly strategies and resources to support pupils' communication, language and learning development - Maintain a positive, safe, calm and structured classroom environment that supports the needs of all learners - Manage behaviour sensitively and effectively in line with the school's specialist behaviour policy - Assess, monitor and provide detailed feedback on pupil progress - Build positive and trusting relationships with pupils, parents, staff and the wider support team - Contribute to EHCP reviews, multidisciplinary planning meetings and whole-school development - Follow safeguarding, health and safety and school-specific policies at all times
About You:
- Qualified Teacher Status (QTS) or equivalent - Experience teaching pupils with SLCN, autism or complex communication needs in a specialist or mainstream setting - Knowledge of and commitment to a Total Communication approach - Familiarity with Makaton or other AAC systems is highly desirable - Strong knowledge of autism-friendly teaching strategies and communication-supportive classroom environments - Familiarity with EHCPs and experience contributing to or implementing individual support plans - Patient, empathetic and committed to a genuinely inclusive and pupil-centred approach - Excellent communication and interpersonal skills with the ability to work effectively within a multidisciplinary team - Adaptable and creative, with the ability to differentiate teaching for a wide range of complex needs - Commitment to safeguarding and promoting pupil well being - Experience in specialist SEN settings is desirable but applications from mainstream teachers with relevant SEN experience are warmly welcomed
