SEMH Teaching Assistant

We are seeking a dedicated and compassionate SEMH (Social, Emotional and Mental Health) Teaching Assistant to join a welcoming primary school in south Birmingham . This role involves supporting pupils with a range of SEMH needs, including Autism, by providing targeted support and personalised assistance to help them access learning.
You will work closely with pupils on a one-to-one or small group basis, helping to build strong, trusting relationships and supporting both their academic progress and emotional wellbeing.
Key Responsibilities
- Provide one-to-one and small group support for pupils with SEMH needs
- Implement individual learning plans and behaviour support strategies
- Help create a safe, structured, and nurturing learning environment
- Build positive, trusting relationships with pupils
- Support pupils with emotional regulation and social development
- Assist with monitoring pupil progress and reporting observations
- Work collaboratively with teachers, SENCOs, and external professionals
Person Specification
Essential:
- Experience working with children or young people with SEND/SEMH needs
- A genuine passion for supporting children with additional needs
- Strong communication skills (verbal and written)
- A calm, patient, and flexible approach
- Ability to work effectively as part of a team
- Commitment to safeguarding and inclusive practice
Desirable:
- Experience supporting pupils with SEMH needs
- Relevant qualifications (e.g., Level 2 or 3 Teaching Assistant)
- Training in behaviour management or SEMH strategies
