SEMH Support Teaching Assistant - Mental Health Experience

Contract: Full-time / Part-time (term-time only options available)

Role Overview

We are looking to appoint a committed and empathetic SEMH Support Teaching Assistant to join our specialist school in the Corby area. This role is well suited to individuals with a background or strong interest in mental health who are motivated to support children and young people with social, emotional and mental health needs.

You will play a key role in supporting pupils to manage their emotions, behaviour, and engagement with learning, working as part of a multidisciplinary team in a nurturing and structured environment.

Key Duties

Deliver targeted 1:1 and small group support for pupils with SEMH needs

Support pupils with emotional regulation, wellbeing, and behaviour throughout the school day

Use trauma-informed and restorative approaches to promote positive outcomes

Help pupils access learning through adapted activities and encouragement

Develop positive, consistent relationships with pupils

Work closely with teaching staff, SEN professionals, and pastoral teams

Support pupils' social skills and resilience in and out of the classroom

Person Specification

The successful candidate will demonstrate:

Experience supporting children or young people with mental health or SEMH needs

Background in areas such as mental health, youth work, psychology, counselling, or care

A calm, reflective, and patient manner

Confidence in managing challenging situations in a professional and supportive way

Strong communication skills and a team-focused approach

A genuine commitment to improving outcomes for vulnerable learners

Desirable Experience and Training

Previous experience in a SEMH school, SEN setting, PRU, or alternative provision

Behaviour support training (e.g. Team Teach or equivalent)

Mental Health First Aid certification

Relevant qualifications such as Teaching Assistant Level 2/3 or Health & Social Care
