Main duties of the job

In this role, you will carry out a variety of dutiesincluding surgery consultations, telephone consultations and queries, visitingpatients at home, checking and signing repeat prescriptions and dealing withqueries, paperwork and correspondence in timely fashion

Making professional, autonomous decisions in relation topresenting problems, whether self-referral or referred from other health careworkers within the organisation

Assessing the health care needs of patients withundifferentiated and undiagnosed problems

Screening patients for disease risk factors and early signsof illness

In consultation with patients and in line with currentpractice disease management protocols, developing care plans for health

Providing counselling and health education

Admitting or discharging patients to and from the caseloadand referring to other care providers as appropriate

Recording clear and contemporaneous consultation notes toagreed standards

Compiling and issuing computer generated acute and repeatprescriptions (avoiding hand-written prescriptions whenever possible)

Prescribing in accordance with the practice prescribingformulary (or generically) whenever this is clinically appropriate

About us

NCPC (North Cumbria Primary Care) was established in August2019 in response to an increasingly fragile general practice provision withinNorth Cumbria. NCPCs vision is to bring practices together to develop asustainable, fully integrated primary care- built locally and deliveredtogether.

The Copeland NCPC area consists of 3 major practices,Fellview Health Care, Lowther Medical Centre and Seascale Health Centre as wellas a shared PCN (Primary Care Network) which delivers services to patientsacross all 3 practices.

We are a not-for-profit company with all money we receive infunding and other business activities going towards supporting theorganisation, our staff, and our services.

Job responsibilities

Clinical responsibilities:

  • In accordance with the practice timetable, as agreed, thepost-holder will make him/her-self available to undertake a variety of dutiesincluding surgery consultations, telephone consultations and queries, visitingpatients at home, checking and signing repeat prescriptions and dealing withqueries, paperwork and correspondence in timely fashion

  • In the course of seeking treatment, patients entrust uswith, or allow us to gather, sensitive information in relation to their healthand other matters. They do so in confidence and have the right to expect thatstaff will respect their privacy and act appropriately
  • In the performance of the duties outlined in this jobdescription, the post-holder may have access to confidential informationrelating to patients and their carers, practice staff and other healthcareworkers. They may also have access to information relating to the practice as abusiness organisation. All such information from any source is to be regardedas strictly confidential
  • Information relating to patients, carers, colleagues,other healthcare workers or the business of the practice may only be divulgedto authorised person in accordance with the practice policies and proceduresrelating to confidentiality and the protection of personal and sensitive data.

Health & Safety:

  • Using personal security systems within the workplaceaccording to practice guidelines
  • Awareness of national standards of infection control andcleanliness and regulatory/contractual, professional requirements and goodpractice guidelines
  • Providing advice on the correct and safe management of thespecimens process including collection, labelling, handling, use of correct andclean containers, storage and transport arrangements
  • Correct personal use of Personal Protective Equipment(PPE_ and ensuring correct use of PPE by other, advising on appropriatecircumstances for use by clinicians, staff and patients
  • Management of the full range of infection controlprocedures in both routine and extraordinary circumstances (e.g. pandemic orindividual infectious circumstances)
  • Hand hygiene standards for self and others
  • Managing directly all incidents of accidental exposure
  • Management and advice relating to infection control andclinically based patient care protocols, and implementation of those protocolsacross the practice
  • Active observation of current working practices across thepractice in relation to infection control, cleanliness and related activities,ensuring that procedures are followed and weaknesses / training needs areidentified, escalating issues as appropriate to the responsible person
  • Identifying the risks involved in work activities andundertaking such activities in a way that manages those risks across clinicaland patient process
  • Making effective use of training to update knowledge andskills, and initiate and manage the training of others across the full range ofinfection control and patient processes
  • Monitoring practice facilities and equipment in relationto infection control, ensuring that proper use is made of hand cleansingfacilities, wipes etc, and that these are sufficient to ensure a good clinicalworking environment. Lack of facilities to be escalated as appropriate to theresponsible manager
  • Safe management of sharps use, storage and disposal
  • Maintenance of own clean working environment
  • Using appropriate infection control procedures,maintaining work areas in a tidy, clean and sterile, and safe way, free fromhazards. Initiation of remedial / corrective action where needed or escalationto responsible management
  • Actively identifying, reporting, and correction of healthand safety hazards and infection hazards immediately when recognised
  • Keeping own work areas and general / patient areasgenerally clean, sterile, identify issues and hazards / risks in relation toother work areas within the business, and assuming responsibility in themaintenance of general standards of cleanliness across the business inconsultation (where appropriate) with responsible managers
  • Undertaking periodic infection control training 9minimumtwice annually)
  • Correct waste and instrument management including handing,segregation, and container use
  • Maintenance of sterile environments

Person Specification

Qualifications

  • Fully qualified GP with GMC registration and inclusion on the NHS England Performers List; with evidence of up-to-date clinical practice and commitment to high standards of patient care.
