Safety & Environment Assurance Manager

We are seeking a Safety & Environment Assurance Manager to join our team based from our Head Office in London Bridge (hybrid working). You will lead the development, implementation, and continuous improvement of audit and assurance programmes across Safety and Environment functions. This role ensures compliance with legislation, industry standards, and internal systems while driving a culture of continuous improvement, learning, and accountability across the organisation. You will provide independent assurance through audits, investigations, and performance monitoring, supporting the organisation in maintaining high safety and environmental standards. Responsibilities
Develop and deliver an integrated audit plan across Safety & Environment systems Conduct audits and produce clear, actionable reports with recommendations Manage surveillance and certification audits (e.g ISO, BS standards) Track and monitor progress of audit actions and recommendations Manage governance forums such as standards review groups Analyse external reports (e.g. industry investigations) for learning opportunities Lead or support investigations into safety incidents as required Ensure compliance with internal standards, checks, and inspections Maintain document control systems for standards and publications Manage regulatory and legislative registers and ensure updates are communicated Provide performance reporting and assurance insights to leadership Support continuous improvement initiatives across the organisation
Qualifications
Recognised Health & Safety qualification (essential) Experience of audit, compliance, and assurance systems Knowledge of railway operations and standards (desirable) Experience in accident/incident investigation (desirable) Strong analytical and investigative capability Excellent report writing and communication skills Ability to present clear, evidence-based recommendations High attention to detail Strong stakeholder engagement and influencing skills Leadership capability with ability to motivate others Good IT skills (Excel, Word, reporting systems) Open, honest, and collaborative communication Personal accountability and ownership Confidence to challenge and drive improvement Ability to see the wider organisational context Strong relationship-building across functions
