Join to apply for the Research Fellow / Senior Research Fellow in Climate Adaptation for Vulnerable Populations – ARCADE Project at UCL role at PhDFinder
University: University College London (UCL)
Country: United Kingdom
Deadline: 2025-08-13
Fields: environmental science, architecture, public health, social policy, urban planning
Are you passionate about research that directly influences policy and improves the lives of vulnerable populations facing the impacts of climate change? Do you aspire to be at the forefront of interdisciplinary work that bridges environmental science, engineering, and public health to create more resilient communities? If so, the ARCADE project at University College London (UCL) offers a unique opportunity to advance your career while making a meaningful societal contribution.
The challenge of climate adaptation in domestic environments, especially for older individuals and those living in less-studied housing, is increasingly urgent. As heatwaves and extreme weather events become more common, understanding and mitigating the impacts on vulnerable populations is critical. The ARCADE project seeks to address this need through innovative research and policy engagement.
About The University Or Research Institute
University College London (UCL) is one of the world’s leading research universities, located in the heart of London. UCL’s Faculty of The Built Environment, known as The Bartlett, houses the Bartlett School of Environment, Energy and Resources (BSEER), which comprises four globally recognized institutes: UCL Energy Institute, UCL Institute for Environmental Design and Engineering (IEDE), UCL Institute for Sustainable Heritage, and UCL Institute for Sustainable Resources. The IEDE, where this post is based, is renowned for its pioneering research on the interactions between the built environment and health, wellbeing, productivity, energy use, and climate change. UCL fosters a collaborative and dynamic academic environment, supporting innovation and societal impact.
Research Topic and Significance
The ARCADE (Accelerating Resilience and Climate Adaptation of Domestic Environments for vulnerable populations) project focuses on protecting vulnerable individuals in the UK from the effects of climate change within their homes. Particular attention is given to older adults and residents of under-researched housing types, such as retirement villages and social housing. These groups are often overlooked in discussions about heat-related health risks. By examining how people in various residential settings are affected by heat, ARCADE aims to generate evidence and recommendations that inform decision-makers and drive policy changes. The project’s outcomes will be vital for enhancing resilience and promoting equitable climate adaptation strategies at both the community and national levels.
