Be Proud. Be Fair. Be Ambitious. Work for Newcastle Children & Families.
We’re not just a local authority—we’re a city with ambition, heart, and a bold vision for children. At Newcastle Children & Families, we’re building something special: a service rooted in relationships, restorative practice, and real impact for the babies, children, young people and families across the city.
As laid out in our EVRY plan , we have a clear vision about being a city united for every baby, child and young person to be happy and healthy, safe and heard, and ready for their next steps. We’re on a mission to become a UNICEF Child Friendly City , and we’re proud to be a Marmot City, tackling inequality and putting children at the centre of everything we do.
Working with people, rather than doing to or for them, is so important to us in Newcastle and our restorative practice approach is a "way of being" that guides how we do what we do. We are truly committed building, maintaining and repairing relationships across our work and systems, learning from good practice and always striving to improve further.
We’re offering an opportunity for experienced social workers to join our Practice Development Team as a Relational Practice Lead - a fixed-term opportunity, available as a secondment or fixed-term contract, open to both internal and external candidates.
The Role
As a Relational Practice Lead, you will model, champion, and embed a restorative, relational approach to social work practice across our service.
This non-case-holding role provides hands-on support to practitioners at all levels. You will:
- Mentor newly qualified social workers, helping them transition into professional practice with confidence and skill.
- Work closely with social workers and teams to manage and respond to complex practice issues.
- Offer mentorship, joint working opportunities, and practice development activities grounded in the lived experiences of children, young people, and families.
- Promote excellent social work practice based on research, evidence, and direct professional experience.
You will work within the Practice Development Team, which provides centralised support across all the teams that make up Children’s Social Care, co-ordinates the ASYE programme and student routes, and provide bespoke development opportunities directly linked to practice with families in Newcastle – so we are constantly learning and improving in the work that we do.
Our Relational Practice Leads are highly valued across the service, providing specialist knowledge, expertise and guidance for social workers and other practitioners at all stages in their careers. The role is varied, challenging and really meaningful; through being situated within practice, it makes a real different to the experiences of babies, children, young people and families across Newcastle. It is also a role that supports professional development in leading in practice, facilitating training and reflective spaces, and promoting core social work values across the wider systems that support children and families.
Why Newcastle?
Newcastle is more than a place—it’s a community. A vibrant, multicultural city where creativity, kindness, and resilience run deep. This is a city that welcomes you—and your ideas—with open arms.
We’re proud to be:
- A UNICEF Child Friendly City in progress
- A Marmot City, committed to tackling health inequalities
- A city where social workers are valued, supported, and heard
A dedicated 5-day induction
Specialist training in Restorative Practice through workshops and masterclasses
Generous annual leave + bank holidays (with the option to buy more)
Flexible and hybrid working options
A generous flexi-time scheme
Employee Assistance Programme
Defined benefit pension scheme
Access to home electronics and vehicle leasing schemes
