The Role
We are seeking an R&D Tax Assistant Manager specialising in Software & Technology to support innovative companies in identifying and securing Research & Development tax incentives.
Working with a portfolio of high-growth technology businesses, you will collaborate with CTOs, engineering teams and senior stakeholders to analyse complex software development projects and assess their eligibility under UK R&D tax legislation. The role involves translating technical challenges into clear, structured documentation and delivering robust and compliant R&D claims.
This is an opportunity to combine technical knowledge with advisory skills while supporting the growth of a technology-focused R&D consulting practice.
Role Objectives
- Engage with software and technology clients to assess eligibility for R&D tax relief across areas such as SaaS platforms, cloud infrastructure, AI/ML development and data engineering.
- Conduct technical discussions and interviews with engineering teams and product stakeholders to identify qualifying R&D activities.
- Analyse client projects against HMRC R&D legislation, focusing on technological advancement and uncertainty.
- Prepare clear technical narratives and supporting documentation for R&D claims.
- Compile and review qualifying R&D expenditure and supporting financial schedules.
- Support the preparation and submission of claims to HMRC and assist with responses to enquiries where required.
- Build strong client relationships and provide ongoing advisory support regarding R&D eligibility and documentation.
- Mentor and support junior members of the team.
Knowledge, Skills and Experience Required
- Degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Engineering or a related technology discipline.
- Experience supporting or preparing R&D tax relief claims for software or technology companies.
- Strong understanding of modern software technologies such as cloud platforms, APIs, distributed systems, AI/ML or SaaS platforms.
- Ability to analyse complex technical challenges within software development environments.
- Excellent communication skills with the ability to translate technical concepts into clear written documentation.
- Strong attention to detail and ability to manage multiple client engagements.
- Experience mentoring or supporting junior staff.
