Quantity Surveyor
Location: Pontyclun / South Wales
Salary: £40,000 - £50,000 (depending on experience)
Job Type: Permanent

A well-established specialist subcontractor is looking to appoint a Quantity Surveyor to join its commercial team in South Wales.

This is an excellent opportunity for someone who has recently qualified, early in their QS career, or already working in a junior / assistant QS role and ready to step into a broader position with genuine exposure to live projects and commercial responsibility. However, people with more experience are also welcome to apply.

The business delivers specialist construction packages across carpentry, joinery and internal works for projects in both the public and private sectors across South Wales and the South West. You’ll join a busy and supportive commercial team, working on projects from tender stage through to final account while developing strong all-round QS skills in a specialist subcontractor environment.

The Role
You will support the commercial management of projects from early-stage pricing through to final account, working closely with experienced colleagues and learning the full lifecycle of subcontractor-delivered construction packages.

This role will suit someone who wants to build a long-term commercial career, understands the value of detail and organisation, and is keen to learn how projects are priced, procured, managed and delivered in the real world.

Key Responsibilities

* Assist with take-offs, pricing support and cost planning for tenders and negotiated works

* Help prepare estimates and commercial submissions for specialist construction packages

* Support subcontractor and supplier enquiries, comparisons and procurement processes

* Assist with applications for payment, valuations, variations and final accounts

* Help maintain cost records, commercial reports and forecasting information

* Review drawings, specifications and project information to identify scope, risks and opportunities

* Work closely with operational and site teams to monitor progress, changes and cost impact

* Attend internal meetings, pre-start meetings and site visits where required

* Build strong working relationships with clients, suppliers, subcontractors and project teams

* Support the wider commercial function with day-to-day QS and estimating duties as required

What We’re Looking For

* Degree in Quantity Surveying or another relevant construction-related qualification, or some previous experience in a QS / commercial role

* Open to graduates, junior QSs, assistant QSs, or candidates in the early stages of a commercial construction career

* Good numeracy and strong attention to detail

* Able to read drawings and understand construction information, or keen to develop this further

* Strong communication skills and a willingness to learn from experienced colleagues

* Good Microsoft Excel and general IT skills

* Organised approach with the ability to manage tasks and deadlines

* Full UK driving licence would be useful, though not essential depending on experience level

* Any previous exposure to subcontractor environments, carpentry, joinery, fit-out, interiors or finishing trades would be an advantage, but is not essential

Why Apply?

* Genuine opportunity for a graduate or junior QS to develop properly within a supportive commercial team

* Join an established specialist subcontractor with a strong pipeline of work

* Gain exposure to both estimating and post-contract QS duties

* Work on a range of specialist packages rather than being limited to one narrow area

* Long-term permanent opportunity in South Wales

* Salary of £40,000 - £50,000 depending on experience
