Role Synopsis: As a Principal Engineer Static Engineer within bp Solutions Engineering, you will be at the forefront of delivering technical leadership and expertise for our most complex and high impact engineering projects worldwide. You will work with both capital projects and operating businesses. Your primary focus will be on advancing technical excellence in pressure systems, developing and maintaining robust engineering standards, and ensuring best practice is embedded across all levels of mechanical engineering. You will work closely with the Chief Engineer to champion the health of the mechanical engineering discipline—shaping professional development opportunities, mentoring engineers at every stage of their careers, and strengthening bp's external technical reputation. Your influence will extend beyond project delivery, helping to set the strategic direction for mechanical engineering within bp and ensuring our work supports the company's commitment to safe, sustainable, and innovative energy solutions. Key Accountabilities: Provide authoritative technical leadership and direction on complex engineering projects, ensuring the highest standards of safety, quality, and performance in pressure systems.
Develop, implement, and continuously improve engineering standards, technical requirements, and best practices for mechanical engineering across bp.
Shape and deliver professional development initiatives for mechanical engineers at all levels, supporting the Chief Engineer in building a robust and future-ready discipline.
Mentor, coach, and inspire engineering teams, fostering a culture of technical excellence, innovation, and continuous learning.
Collaborate with multidisciplinary teams and stakeholders to deliver integrated solutions that advance bp's business, safety, and sustainability goals.
Represent bp Engineering in technical forums, industry groups, and with external partners, strengthening bp's reputation as a leader in engineering.
Champion the adoption of digital tools, data-driven approaches, and modern engineering methodologies to drive efficiency and innovation across the organization.
Essential Education, Experience and Job Requirements: Degree in Mechanical Engineering; Chartered Engineer status at Fellowship level or equivalent professional accreditation is highly desirable. Substantial experience in mechanical engineering within the energy, oil & gas sector, with a strong emphasis on pressure systems and complex risk management and project delivery. Master level skills in fitness-for-service and design compliance for pressure vessels and piping, addressing brittle fracture, ductile failure, fatigue, vibration, and flanged joint integrity to ensure safe, reliable, and compliant operations. Demonstrated success in leading multidisciplinary engineering teams and delivering innovative solutions in challenging environments. Excellent communication, stakeholder engagement, and influencing skills, with the ability to build trust and drive alignment across diverse groups. A track record of mentoring and developing engineering talent, fostering a culture of continuous learning and professional growth. Deep commitment to safety, quality, and ethical standards, with a proactive approach to risk management and compliance. Strong digital literacy and openness to adopting new technologies.
