You will work in a team of high performing data scientists and subject matter experts to build bespoke models and analysis tools to develop insights and advice for our clients most important challenges.Our strategic modelling team supports clients with the following services:Energy system transition modellingStrategy and policy developmentScenario planning and strategy / policy simulationsComplex business case analysisCost, risk and benefits modellingDecision optimisation under uncertaintyDeveloping AI decision making systemsDecision science and decision support toolsThe team is highly collaborative, often working closely with experts in economics, technology, engineering and behavioural psychology.Recent Projects IncludeHelping NESO to improve the Least Worst Regret decision making process for the Centralised Strategic Network Plan (CSNP). We worked with a team of academics to build a new decision-making framework that incorporates Bayesian statistics into investment decision making.Supporting Citizens Advice by building a probabilistic modelling tool for understanding the future of domestic gas bills during different energy transition scenarios. This project was nominated for a 2025 British Data Award.Building a BESS dispatch prediction tool to understand how future BESS will likely play in the Balancing Mechanism and Frequency Response markets, helping NESO to consider market stacking behaviour in their construction planning assumptions.Developing a resilience modelling capability to understand the impact to electricity and gas consumers during shock events. Working with UK government, system operator and DNOs to build decision support tools for future investments to build system resilience.Using electricity system simulation tools, such as PyPSA, to develop Fractal Flow, technology to improve visibility between operators at different scales of the GB electricity system, helping to optimise control of distributed resources.Building AI tools to automatically extract data and quantitative insights from local area energy plans, regional energy strategies and national strategies. Using uncertain data to build statistical forecasting tools for future demand and system changeYou will also have the chance to get involved in our other consultancy market sectors including major infrastructure, transport, civil nuclear and defence.RequirementsWe are looking for candidates who can bring diversity of thought and fresh ideas, alongside their understanding of how the energy policy and market context to society's next challenges.We Are Looking For Candidates WhoHave developed and maintained a position of influence with a network of key industry clients and partners who they collaborate with.Thinks strategically about client needs and offers their expert perspective to challenge their thinking.Are experienced at developing winning proposals, with a strong track record leading significant opportunities through to completion and taking a balanced approach to identify the return versus risk.Have an excellent understanding of the energy system and markets in Great Britain and seen as a leader in their field of expertise.Have experience delivering energy system modelling, data science, operational research or statistical analysis for solving complex challenges. Candidates should be adept at applying a range of other creative problem-solving techniques to deliver successful outcomes for clients and understand the latest technology choices available.Are confident communicating complex ideas and advice to senior stakeholders, both in writing and in person, with a track record of effective influence.Are confident leading projects, managing teams and taking responsibility for the success of projects.Are effective collaborators with experience of working as part of a dynamic team.Drive continuous improvement, actively contributing to the development of others through mentoring, coaching, knowledge sharing and thought leadership.Acts as a visible role model to colleagues, demonstrating a development path they can follow and supporting others in their careers.
