Principal Electrical Engineer (Mechanical bias) Job Type: Full‑time, Permanent, Defence sector. Job Description The Electrical and Mechanical Specialist role is to work in the client’s Engineering team supporting the development of operational requirements associated with the Site and to support the technical assurance for the design and implementation of both Onshore and Marine systems for a key project. The scope of work is the replacement/refurbishment of existing structures, plant and equipment to comply with modern standards and regulations. About the Role We’re looking for a skilled Mechanical & Electrical Specialist to join our Engineering team, supporting a major infrastructure programme focused on the refurbishment and replacement of critical site systems. You’ll play a key role in shaping operational requirements and providing technical assurance across both onshore and marine systems, ensuring all works meet modern standards, safety regulations, and project objectives. Responsibilities
Provide expert M&E input to support site operations and safety case integration Offer technical guidance to engineers, project teams, and supply chain partners Support Project Managers in overseeing consultants and contractors Contribute to project optioneering and early‑stage solution development Develop work scopes and define functional and user requirements Review and approve technical drawings, designs, and documentation Respond to engineering queries and resolve technical challenges Oversee detailed design activities in line with client standards Assess contractor submissions (method statements, risk assessments, etc.) Supervise construction/deconstruction activities to ensure design compliance Engage with stakeholders throughout the project lifecycle Ensure compliance with Health, Safety, Environmental, Security & Quality standards Support commissioning and decommissioning activities Deliver technical presentations and contribute to training initiatives Represent the organisation at stakeholder and supply chain meetings Support project close‑out and hand‑over activities
Qualifications & Experience
Strong Mechanical & Electrical engineering background Experience in complex infrastructure, defence, or marine environments (desirable) Ability to manage stakeholders and provide technical leadership Solid understanding of design assurance and project delivery processes Strong communication and problem‑solving skills Minimum HNC in Electrical Engineering (or equivalent) Strong knowledge of HV/LV power generation and distribution systems, ideally within nuclear or defence environments Experience with Control & Instrumentation systems, including SCADA monitoring Proven experience in the design and assessment of electrical systems and equipment Solid understanding of safe systems of work for electrical systems in regulated environments Working knowledge of Mechanical Engineering principles Experience in the design and assessment of mechanical systems, including static equipment, pipework, tanks and vessels Familiarity with British Standards, Eurocodes, and relevant engineering codes Knowledge of UK nuclear regulations and industry best practice Strong theoretical and practical experience across concept design, detailed design, construction phases Background in heavy industrial and/or mechanical engineering systems Experience within the UK nuclear sector (energy or defence), especially safety‑related structures, systems and components Experience delivering project engineering work packages, including site integration in regulated environments Ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team Strong understanding of compliance with legislation and industry standards Experience producing and reviewing technical documentation Confident in stakeholder engagement and communication Basic Health & Safety training for site‑based work Chartered Engineer status or working towards Understanding of nuclear safety cases Experience with nuclear safety committees / authorisation groups
