TRL, a global leader in transport innovation, isseeking a Principal Consultant to drive the end-to-end delivery of high-value asset management projects across the highways and infrastructure sector.

Are you a proven project leader with a passion for delivering complex infrastructure solutions that make a measurable impact? The successful candidate willbring a track record of hands-on delivery of turning strategy into action, with a strong project delivery mindset, technical depth, and the ability to coordinate multi-disciplinary teams and stakeholders to deliver high-quality outcomes on time and within scope.

The successful candidate can be based UK wide with some travel expected. Flexible working options for full or part-time employment is available.

What youll do:

  • Own the delivery of multi-disciplinary projects, ensuring outputs meet agreed scope, quality, and deadlines.
  • Translate asset strategies into robust delivery plans, actionable workstreams, and measurable outcomes.
  • Lead development of technical outputs (e.g. maintenance strategies, condition frameworks, investment plans).
  • Apply structured programme and risk management to keep delivery on track.
  • Provide line management and mentorship to consultants, supporting their development and ensuring high performance across project teams.
  • Ensure compliance with ISO 55000, PAS 55, and other sector-specific standards.
  • Lead client engagement, technical workshops, and governance reporting with a delivery-first mindset.
  • Provide quality assurance across deliverables and continuously seek ways to improve delivery performance.

What were looking for:

  • Degree in Engineering, Asset Management, or a related field.
  • Significant experience delivering infrastructure projects (highways or transport preferred).
  • Strong track record managing complex, multi-stakeholder programmes ideally in a consultancy setting.
  • Proven ability to lead teams, manage risk, and drive project execution.
  • Clear, concise communicator able to translate complexity into actionable plans.
  • Committed to continuous improvement and innovation in delivery.
  • Strong analytical and stakeholder engagement skills.
  • Experience working with local authorities, transport bodies, or public sector clients preferred.
  • Chartered/professionally qualified (e.g. CEng, IAM, CIHT) preferred.
