Job Description
Principal / Associate / Technical Director – Geotechnical Engineer
Glasgow - Hybrid working
️ Engineering Consultancy | Major Infrastructure Project
Permanent
We are working with a well-established engineering consultancy seeking an experienced Geotechnical Design Engineer at Principal, Associate, or Technical Director level to lead geotechnical delivery on a major heavy civil engineering project in Scotland.
This is a long-term opportunity on a significant infrastructure scheme expected to run for approximately five years, where you will play a key role in leading geotechnical design, developing technical strategy, and building a small specialist team to support the project.
The Role
You will lead geotechnical design activities with particular focus on retaining structures design, slope stability assessments, and geotechnical design methodology.
The project involves significant temporary works and enabling infrastructure, including the design and assessment of temporary access roads across peat and other challenging ground conditions, requiring careful consideration of ground improvement, drainage, and stability.
This work forms part of a major power transmission route upgrade, so experience on energy infrastructure, transmission, or linear infrastructure projects would be beneficial, although not essential.
Alongside the project work, you will also support wider geotechnical input across the consultancy’s buildings and infrastructure portfolio.
Key responsibilities include:
Leading geotechnical design strategy on a major infrastructure project in Scotland
Designing and reviewing retaining structures, including embedded retaining walls, sheet pile walls, and reinforced soil systems
Undertaking slope stability analysis and developing ground stabilisation solutions
Providing geotechnical input into temporary works and temporary access roads in peat and challenging ground conditions
Developing and overseeing geotechnical design methodology in line with relevant standards
Recruiting and leading a small geotechnical design team to support the project
Producing and reviewing geotechnical reports, calculations, and technical documentation
Working collaboratively with multidisciplinary design teams across civil, structural, and infrastructure engineering
Supporting geotechnical input across other consultancy projects, including buildings and infrastructure schemes
Requirements
Degree in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering, or a related discipline
Significant experience in geotechnical design within infrastructure or heavy civil engineering projects
Strong background in retaining structures design and slope stability analysis
Experience working within an engineering consultancy environment
Chartered Engineer (CEng) status or working towards chartership
Experience with peat ground conditions and geotechnical drainage considerations would be advantageous, but not essential
Ability to lead and develop a technical geotechnical team
Why Apply?
Opportunity to lead geotechnical design on a major long-term infrastructure project
Build and develop a specialist geotechnical team within a respected consultancy
Work across a diverse portfolio of infrastructure and building projects
Competitive salary, car allowance, and performance-related bonus
Flexible working and multiple UK office locations available
