Primary SEN Teaching Assistant

New Today

Are you an experienced SEN Teaching Assistant looking for a highly rewarding 1:1 role where you can make a genuine difference every day?

Do you have the patience, empathy, and consistency needed to support a child with Autism in a structured and nurturing environment?

Academics is seeking a dedicated SEN Teaching Assistant to provide 1:1 support for a Year 5 pupil with Autism Spectrum Disorder, starting ASAP.

About the Role

This is a full-time, long‑term position where you will work closely with one pupil in Year 5, supporting both their learning and emotional development throughout the school day.

The pupil is verbal, but communication can be limited as they may "parrot" language rather than engage in back‑and‑forth conversation. They benefit from clear, simple instructions and consistent adult support.

Pupil Profile

  • Communication: Verbal, though tends to repeat language rather than initiate conversation
  • Academic Level: Working around Year 2 level; able to read, write, and complete basic arithmetic
  • Learning Style: Responds well to structure and follows a visual timetable
  • Behavioural Needs: Requires encouragement to follow instructions and understand boundaries
  • Support Network: Has primarily worked with one Teaching Assistant and one class teacher, with occasional additional staff at lunchtime
  • Additional Needs: None beyond ASD diagnosis
  • Interests: Enjoys cartoons such as Phineas and Ferb and has a strong attachment to a school teddy named "Lucy," which provides comfort and consistency

Your Responsibilities

  • Provide consistent 1:1 support throughout the school day
  • Use clear communication strategies and visual supports to aid understanding
  • Help the pupil stay engaged with learning tasks tailored to their ability level
  • Support emotional regulation and reinforce positive behaviour
  • Build a trusting, supportive relationship to help the pupil feel safe and understood
  • Work collaboratively with the class teacher and SENCO to implement strategies and routines

Position: Primary SEN Teaching Assistant (1:1)

Pay: £92.50 per day (weekly pay)

  • Has a genuine passion for supporting children with additional needs

The School

  • Strong leadership and a collaborative staff team
  • Ongoing training and guidance from SEN specialists
