We are currently seeking an experienced, trauma‑informed mentor, with the ability to later deliver Functional Skills Maths and English, to support a post‑16 learner (Year 12) based in the DT10 (Sturminster Newton) area.
This role will initially focus on mentoring and relationship‑building, with a gradual transition into Functional Skills tuition once the young person feels safe, settled, and ready to engage academically. This is a carefully paced, low‑pressure placement where emotional wellbeing comes first.
Hours & Location
- Provision: 1:1
- Hours: 5 hours per week
- Location: Home‑based and community‑based
- Start Date: As soon as possible
Young person presents with:
-PTSD
-Moderate depressive episode
-Generalised anxiety disorder
This young person has never been able to attend school full‑time and requires at least one rest day per week. Since transitioning into post‑16 provision, her relationship with education has broken down, and she currently finds it difficult to leave the house other than attending the gym with familiar peers.
They has previously engaged positively with online learning and has achieved a Level 3 qualification in Marine Zoology.
Role Focus (Phased Approach)
Phase 1 - Mentoring (Initial Focus) The mentor will:
Build a safe, trusting, and consistent relationship Support emotional regulation and anxiety management Develop confidence and readiness to engage Provide community‑based mentoring and structured activities Support social communication and peer interaction Encourage wellbeing through interest‑based activities (e.g. cooking, routine‑building)Phase 2 - Tuition (When Ready) Once they feels emotionally settled, the role will gradually include:
Functional Skills Maths and English Confidence‑based, flexible teaching Learning delivered at a pace responsive to emotional needs and anxietySupport Required
The placement will include:
-Trauma‑informed mentoring
-Social skills development
-Functional life skills for independence, such as:Meal planning , Managing finances, Travel skills and Daily living skills
-Identifying weekly activities linked to their interests to develop:
Self‑esteem Emotional wellbeing Independence Ideal Mentor / Tutor Profile
Experience supporting young people with anxiety, trauma, or mental health needs Strong mentoring and relationship‑building skills Able to deliver Functional Skills Maths and English when appropriate Calm, flexible, and emotionally attuned Comfortable working in both home and community settingsThis is a highly rewarding, relationship‑led role for someone who understands that progress begins with trust, safety, and emotional regulation.
