Job Description

We are looking for a new Payroll Specialist on a 6-month Fixed Term Contract (salaried, not day rate), to join the People Team here at c2c Railway.


The Payroll role includes:


  • Overseeing and processing monthly payroll for the four-weekly and monthly payrolls via iTrent HR/Payroll system.
  • Processing pay changes, organisation changes, starters and leavers on the HRIS- capturing these via several means including email, Smartsheets and rostering Excel spreadsheets.
  • Assist in calculating employee bonuses, appraisal payments, sick leave and annual pay increases.
  • Managing our relationship with HMRC for tax purposes.
  • Managing within complex Trade Union arrangements for ASLEF, RMT and TSSA to calculate differing absence payments and shift / overtime allowances.
  • Address payroll-related queries from employees promptly and efficiently.
  • Maintain system updates for payroll-related information.
  • Ensure compliance with payroll tax requirements, including managing P11Ds, P45s, P60s, and other necessary documentation.
  • Work closely with the recruitment team to ensure new starter information is reported and captured accurately for payroll purposes.
  • Generate monthly finance journals, reconciliations, and reports for the central finance department.
  • Provide expert advice on legal compliance and stay informed about emerging benefit trends.
  • Manage relationships with the company’s pension service provider.
  • Collaborate across different departments to improve payroll and benefits processes.
  • Regularly communicate with HR and management regarding absences, maternity/paternity, and payroll and benefits matters.
  • Deliver regular reports to the business on payroll issues
  • Support the implementation of new systems and operational improvements.
  • Prepare and publish our annual Gender Pay Gap report and associated action plans.
  • Continuously identify opportunities to streamline and enhance processes.


We’re looking for someone with around 3-4 years' experience in a dedicated payroll function, with experience of managing a payroll of upwards of 500 staff. Ideally these will be a mix of both blue collar and white collar staff.

We’re offering a salary of up to £50,000 plus benefits, and flexible/hybrid working arrangements (ideally 2-3 days in the office in the City.)
