NPI Mechanical Engineer

New Today

We currently design and manufacture innovative electronic systems in image processing, RFID/NFC, barcode reading, and specialist keyboards used globally in transport, finance, and secure ID sectors. We care about building robust, manufacturable products that “just work” in demanding environments.
The Role
You will own the mechanical engineering NPI process, taking products from concept through design, prototyping, validation, and production handover. Your focus will be on design for manufacturability (DFM), reliability, cost optimisation, and quality.
You will work cross-functionally with electronics, firmware, production, suppliers, and quality teams, ensuring that products are ready for low-to-medium volume, high-reliability manufacturing while maintaining speed to market.
Key Responsibilities
* Lead mechanical design and development for new products (CAD modelling, detailed drawings, BOM management).
* Drive DFM/DFA, ensuring ease of assembly and manufacturability in electronics products.
* Develop and refine jigs, fixtures, and test rigs to support production and quality validation.
* Conduct material selection, tolerance stack-up analysis, and design verification.
* Support prototype builds and product validation, iterating based on test results and feedback.
* Collaborate with suppliers on design reviews, ensuring cost-effective, reliable manufacturing.
* Ensure compliance with relevant regulatory and quality standards (ISO 9001, CE, RoHS, EMC considerations).
* Support root cause analysis and continuous improvement (CI) activities during and post NPI.
* Document processes and design changes, maintaining alignment with engineering change control systems.
Must-Have Skills & Experience
* Strong mechanical design engineering background in electronics product development.
* Proficient in 3D CAD (SolidWorks ) and 2D technical drawing creation for plastics, metals, and assemblies.
* Hands-on experience with NPI, taking products from concept to production.
* Knowledge of injection moulding, sheet metal fabrication, 3D printing, and small-batch manufacturing.
* Practical understanding of DFM/DFA principles.
* Ability to work closely with cross-functional teams (electronics, firmware, quality, production).
* Experience in risk assessment, FMEA, and quality documentation aligned with ISO 9001 or similar.
* Comfort with prototyping, debugging, and iterative design.
Nice to Have
* Experience in RFID/NFC, barcode scanners, or imaging devices mechanical design.
* Familiarity with ISO 13485, ISO 14971, or similar regulated environments.
* Exposure to Lean Manufacturing, Six Sigma methodologies.
* Experience designing test fixtures for production and QA.
* Familiarity with IP rating considerations for rugged devices.
Why us?
* Work on real hardware products that ship globally.
* See your designs in use in airports, banks, and secure environments worldwide.
* Join a collaborative, engineering-led culture where your voice is heard.
* Work across the full product lifecycle, not siloed in CAD-only work.
* Opportunity to contribute to continuous improvement initiatives in a growing company
