We are recruiting for a Mechanical Maintenance Engineer to work on a 6 month contract in St Helens.
The role is working Monday to Friday - days.
Salary is c£45-47,000 per annum plus 25 days' holiday and bank holidays, pension, bonus etc
To ensure the reliable and efficient operation of mechanical equipment and production assets within a fast-moving consumer goods (FMCG) manufacturing environment. The role focuses on minimizing downtime, maintaining safety and quality standards, and supporting continuous improvement across site operations.
Key Responsibilities
Maintenance & Engineering
*
Carry out planned preventive maintenance (PPM) and reactive maintenance on mechanical equipment, including conveyors, pumps, gearboxes, motors, packaging machinery, and processing equipment.
*
Diagnose mechanical faults quickly and accurately, implementing effective corrective actions to minimize production downtime.
*
Support installation, commissioning, and modification of machinery and production lines.
*
Maintain accurate maintenance records using a computerized maintenance management system (CMMS).
Operational Support
*
Provide mechanical engineering support to production teams to ensure optimal equipment performance.
*
Work closely with electrical, automation, and production colleagues to resolve complex breakdowns.
*
Support changeovers and continuous operation in a high-speed, high-volume FMCG environment.
Health, Safety & Compliance
*
Ensure all work is carried out in compliance with health, safety, and environmental regulations, including permit-to-work and lockout/tagout procedures.
*
Adhere to site GMP, hygiene, and food safety standards at all times.
*
Proactively identify safety risks and contribute to risk assessments and safe systems of work.
Continuous Improvement
*
Identify recurring faults and contribute to root cause analysis (RCA) and reliability improvement initiatives.
*
Support continuous improvement projects aimed at increasing equipment reliability, efficiency, and lifespan.
*
Assist in developing and improving PPM schedules and maintenance best practices.
Skills, Knowledge & Experience
Essential
*
Proven experience as a Mechanical Maintenance Engineer within an FMCG or high-speed manufacturing environment.
*
Strong mechanical fault-finding and repair skills.
*
Experience working with conveyors, pneumatics, hydraulics, bearings, drives, and rotating equipment.
*
Ability to work under pressure in a fast-paced production environment.
*
Good understanding of health and safety and food manufacturing standards.
*
Competent in reading mechanical drawings and technical documentation.
Desirable
*
Experience with continuous improvement or TPM methodologies.
*
Basic electrical fault-finding awareness (non-intrusive).
*
Experience with CMMS systems and maintenance reporting.
