Position: Mechanical Design Engineer
Location: Stroud
Salary: £40,000 - £50,000
An established manufacturer in Stroud is seeking a Mechanical Design Engineer to support the design and delivery of high-value machinery and engineered systems. This role will suit a hands-on engineer with strong mechanical design capability, working across varied projects within a collaborative engineering team.
The ideal candidate will be degree-qualified (or equivalent) in Mechanical Engineering and experienced in producing detailed designs, calculations, and technical documentation. Proficiency in 3D CAD and a solid understanding of materials, fabrication, and mechanical systems are essential.
This office-based role offers the opportunity to work on technically varied projects, supporting design from concept through to manufacture, testing, and delivery, within a supportive and well-established engineering environment.
Mechanical Design Engineer Job Overview
Develop and refine mechanical design concepts, producing 3D models, detailed drawings, and specifications
Produce accurate calculations, reports, and technical documentation to support design solutions
Create and update drawings for new and existing products, ensuring compliance with relevant standards
Support component selection, costing, and preparation of bills of materials
Liaise closely with production, purchasing, and quality teams to ensure designs are manufacturable and cost-effective
Assist with testing, commissioning, and resolving technical issues during build and implementation
Maintain clear and accurate project documentation throughout the design lifecycle
Contribute to continuous improvement of design processes and engineering standards
Mechanical Design Engineer Job Requirements
Degree-qualified in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent qualification such as HNC/HND with experience)
Proven experience in a mechanical design role within an engineering or manufacturing environment
Hands-on design capability with the ability to work from first principles
​Experience using 2D and 3D CAD software (Autodesk Inventor and/or AutoCAD )
Knowledge of material selection, fabrication methods, and mechanical assemblies
Understanding of hydraulics, pneumatics, or fluid systems advantageous
Experience preparing technical drawings, calculations, and supporting documentation
Based within a commutable distance of Stroud
Competent with Microsoft Office applications

Salary £40,000 - £50,000 DOE
31 days holiday inclusive of public holidays
Working hours: Monday - Friday, 08:30 - 17:00
