Mechanical Design Engineer

Edinburgh, UK

Full-Time | Office-Based (5 Days Per Week)

Salary: Up to £69,000 DOE

About the Role

My client is seeking an experienced Mechanical Design Engineer to join their established Edinburgh-based design team due to continued growth.

This is a predominantly office-based role (5 days per week), where you will be responsible for developing and delivering detailed mechanical designs to support safe, compliant, and high-quality installations across a range of construction projects.

You will play a key role in coordinating mechanical services design from concept through to detailed stage, ensuring compliance with current regulations and project delivery deadlines.

Key Responsibilities

Designing in accordance with fire strategy reports, local building regulations and planning authority requirements Attending and contributing to design team meetings Carrying out site surveys of existing installations where required Producing heating and cooling load calculations (thermal modelling) and ventilation calculations using industry software Sizing and selection of AHUs, FCUs, extract fans, pumps, chillers, ASHPs, boilers, plate heat exchangers and associated plant Producing above-ground drainage calculations and system sizing Sizing and selection of domestic hot and cold-water equipment (heaters, storage tanks, etc.) Producing pipework and ductwork sizing calculations using recognised software or spreadsheets Sizing and selection of firefighting sprinkler and pumping systems ( but not essential) Producing stage reports and technical presentations Preparing Designer’s Risk Assessments and Mitigation Reports Detailing mechanical layouts and schematics for construction Ensuring designs meet programme and project deadlines Producing detailed design and survey reports

Requirements

Extensive experience in Mechanical Building Services within the construction sector Degree in Mechanical Engineering (or equivalent qualification) Strong knowledge of CIBSE guidance and UK/European standards (BS, EN, IEC, etc.) Working knowledge of design software such as Hevacomp, Carrier HAP, CyMap, IES or TAS Ability to operate effectively in a fast-paced, evolving project environment Strong communication and coordination skills
