We have a locum consultant child and adolescent psychiatrist role to cover maternity leave within the EDT Harrow CAMHS (CNWL).
Key Details
This post offers a relocation package of up to £8,000 (eligibility applies), generous annual and study leave, an NHS pension, and staff discounts including new car purchase/lease.
The successful applicant will contribute to the daytime duty consultant rota in Harrow CAMHS, working alongside 5 consultant psychiatrists, two SpRs (St Mary’s Higher Training Scheme), two specialty doctors and a core trainee. The MDT provides training placements for clinical and counselling psychology trainees, systemic therapy trainees, child psychotherapy trainees and student nurses, with opportunities for undergraduate and postgraduate teaching, training and research in partnership with Imperial College London.
Main Duties of the Job
As a Consultant Psychiatrist you will work as an integral part of a multi‑disciplinary care team comprising nursing staff, clinical psychologists, systemic family psychotherapists, child psychotherapists and administrative staff. Your responsibilities include assessing and developing care plans for children with a range of emotional disorders and related complexity, and joining the daytime duty consultant rota.

Each CAMHS service has its own local management structure; the Harrow team is friendly, inclusive and respectful, staffed by a large multi‑disciplinary team of clinicians. We aim to provide an accessible, flexible and responsive local service for patients and professionals working with children, using behavioural, systemic, CBT, IPT‑A, DBT, psychodynamic and group therapies as well as psychopharmacological approaches. The team holds monthly CPD sessions, business meetings and consultant meetings.
Detailed Job Description And Main Responsibilities
Provide psychiatric leadership to the EDT in partnership with the other consultant psychiatrist.
Deliver clinical input to the EDT, including conducting initial assessments, psychiatric assessments, risk assessments and managing treatment, initiated and monitored pharmacological treatments.
Support the EDT MDT with comprehensive assessment, diagnosis and management planning, guided by the CAMHS care pathways and clinical model.
Provide psychiatric consultation to the EDT MDT and the wider CAMHS team when indicated.
Support the MDT to meet expectations of 16 clinical contacts per week (one new assessment and 15 other contacts) without supervisory or management responsibilities.
Coordinate with NHS England, Commissioners and Tier 4 services when referral to Tier 4 is indicated.
Engage with Tier 4 services and contribute to CRAFT and CPA meetings.
Person Specification
Education And Qualifications – Essential Criteria
Primary Medical Degree.
Full GMC Registration with a licence to practice.
Section 12 MHA approval.
Approved Clinician status or willingness to apply for approval.
Desirable Criteria
Additional postgraduate qualification relevant to working with children and adolescents.
Inclusion on the Specialist Register for Child and Adolescent Psychiatry or equivalent (or CCT expected within 6 months of interview).

Experience, Skills And Abilities – Essential Criteria
Competence in psychopharmacology and non‑medication therapeutic approaches.
Experience and training in assessing and managing complex cases with high risk, emotional disorders and neurodevelopmental disorders.
Knowledge of Clinical Governance/Care Quality.
Ability to participate in Medical Audit and Quality Assurance.
Experience teaching and supervising junior staff and other disciplines.
Desirable Criteria
Management training.
Experience of research.
Experience in paediatrics.
Publication in a peer‑reviewed journal.
Personal Skills & Qualities – Essential Criteria
Excellent communication and empathic skills.
Demonstrable leadership skills.
