Locum Consultant Interventional Radiologist
We are seeking a Locum Consultant in Interventional Radiology on a fixed-term contract for 6-12 months.
The Radiology Department offers comprehensive imaging and interventional services supporting a busy District General Hospital. We prioritize wellbeing and work-life balance, offering flexible job plans and working arrangements, including the option of a hybrid role. Home PACS access is available for remote reporting.
Our modernized service includes a newly refurbished 45m suite with Siemens Artis-Q, Dyna CT, Cydar AI, IVUS, lithotripsy, and a 5-bed radiology day unit, with over 70% of vascular interventions now day cases. We are also planning a new 79m hybrid IR theatre opening in 2025.
GMC specialist registration is essential for this role. If not held, and not pending CCT/ARCP/CESR, the role will convert to a Specialist contract under NHS terms. Please apply accordingly.
Main duties of the job
Taunton is a BSIR exemplar site, performing approximately 18.5k IR procedures in 2023/2024.
You will be supported in developing new services and encouraged to pursue areas of interest. The role involves a non-resident 1:10 interventional on-call rota at Musgrove Park, supported by experienced nurses and radiographers, with no diagnostic on-call requirement.
Your work will include image-guided biopsy and drainage, vascular and aneurysm support, MDT participation, IR clinics, and regional vascular imaging reporting. You will also contribute to general reporting to support the wider team.
You will be part of the Somerset and North Devon vascular network, supporting a population of over 800,000. The Taunton site centralizes emergency vascular procedures, aneurysm work, and imaging, and handles elective referrals from Yeovil and North Devon, offering a varied caseload.

Person Specification
Qualifications
- FRCR or equivalent
- Full GMC registration
- Entry on GMC registration via CCT or CESR(CP) or within 6 months at interview
- Interventional radiology subspecialty fellowship
Experience
- 3 years' IR subspecialty training
- Vascular and non-vascular IR experience
- Recent CME and training progression
- Experience in clinical audit or quality improvement
- Evidence-based practice
Additional criteria
- Teaching experience at undergraduate and postgraduate levels
- Ability to prioritize and work in a multidisciplinary team
- Career progression aligned with personal circumstances
- Honesty, reliability, flexibility
- Excellent communication skills in English

Salary: £109,725 to £145,478 per year, based on 10 PA's per week, plus on-call supplement.
