Acute and tertiary health services are delivered from over 1,000 beds across two sites, by around 8,000 staff.
St. George’s University Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust is a major acute hospital that offers very specialist care for complex injuries and illnesses, including trauma, neurology, cardiac care, renal transplantation, cancer care and stroke. It has a helipad which opened in spring 2014 and the work of its emergency department can currently be seen on Channel 4’s ‘24 Hours in A&E’ programme. The hospital also provides all the usual care you would expect from a local NHS district general hospital.
We also provide services at Queen Mary’s Hospital in Roehampton. These include outpatient rapid diagnostic and treatment facilities, a minor injuries unit, limb fitting services and 70 elderly, intermediate care and rehabilitation beds.
As well as hospital services, we provide a wide variety of specialist, maternity and community services to children, adults, older people and people with learning disabilities. These services are provided from St John’s Therapy Centre, 11 health centres and clinics, schools, nursing homes and people’s own homes. The trust also manages the healthcare service at HMP Wandsworth.
Job overview
Applications are invited for substantive consultant posts with as main interests in G eneral Subspecialties and Trauma Anaesthesia . Th is is a full time post at 10 PAs with 8.5 PAs for direct clinical care and 1 .5 PA s for SPA in support of personal CPD, preparation for GMC appraisal and revalidation. (Up to four substantive posts are available).
Applicants should have the FRCA or an equivalent qualification and have suitable experience as described in the person specification in the job plan description . They should be on the GMC Specialist Register or within six months of their expected CCT date at the time of interview. Experience of NHS working practices and systems, (minimum two year s working for the NHS) is essential.
For the timetable / DCC please see detailed info in the main advert. Specialist skills required include advanced training in perioperative medicine, trauma and regional anaesthesia. A proportion of the workload (flexible annualised sessions) has to be delivered at prime-time hours, at weekends and/or in the evenings. The workload during general on-calls does not ordinarily include obstetrics, paeds , ITU, major trauma, neuro, cardiac, which are all covered by separate consultant rotas. However, at times when workload exceeds manpower , you may be asked to help consultant colleagues on different rotas (example major trauma, obstetrics) . We will support applicants to pursue their subspecialty interests, as far as practicable .

The post holder will join the General Group of Anaesthetists which consists of approximately 35 Consultants and the Trauma Anaesthetists (approx. 1 4 ) . We are a friendly, approachable, dynamic and diverse group, who are enthusiastic in both teaching colleagues and learning new skills from colleagues . There is emphasis in wellbeing and supporting each other. The case mix at St George’s tends to be complex and challenging . Given the huge expertise in the department, it is easy to seek advice and discuss with an expert in a certain field or acquire new skills . This is a great opportunity to join our award-winning anaesthetic department, which is a highly diverse and inclusive workforce of over 100 Anaesthetic C onsultants providing expertise in a wide variety of anaesthetic subspecialties including Paediatrics, Neurosurgery, Cardio- thoracics , Intensive Care, Ac ute and C hronic P ain relief and academic positions in SGUL. There are over 60 trainees from St George’s School of Anaesthesia and clinical fellows who rotate through the anaesthesia subspecialties.

The post holder will be required to participate in clinical governance activities within the service centre.
