About the Role:

We are seeking an experienced and driven Lead Controls Engineer to join our engineering team in Coventry. This role focuses on the design, development, and implementation of advanced control systems for machinery used in the automotive and logistics sectors. You will play a key leadership role, guiding a team of engineers while delivering high-quality automation solutions for complex industrial applications.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Lead the design and development of control systems for automated machinery and production lines.
  • Oversee PLC, HMI, and SCADA system programming, integration, and commissioning.
  • Provide technical leadership and mentorship to a team of controls engineers.
  • Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, and software teams to deliver fully integrated solutions.
  • Manage project timelines, budgets, and technical deliverables.
  • Conduct system testing, troubleshooting, and optimisation on-site and remotely.
  • Ensure compliance with industry standards, safety regulations, and best practices.
  • Support customer interactions, including technical discussions, site visits, and issue resolution.
  • Drive continuous improvement in engineering processes and system performance.


Key Requirements:

  • Degree in Electrical Engineering, Control Systems Engineering, or a related field.
  • Proven experience in a senior or lead controls engineering role within automotive, logistics, or industrial machinery environments.
  • Strong expertise in PLC programming (e.g., Siemens, Rockwell/Allen-Bradley).
  • Experience with HMI/SCADA systems (e.g., WinCC, FactoryTalk, Ignition).
  • Knowledge of industrial communication protocols (e.g., Profinet, EtherNet/IP, Modbus).
  • Experience with motion control systems, robotics, and automated material handling systems is highly desirable.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and project management skills.
  • Willingness to travel occasionally for commissioning and customer support.


Desirable Skills:

  • Experience with safety systems and standards (e.g., SIL, PL, machinery safety directives).
  • Familiarity with Industry 4.0 technologies and data-driven automation.
