Salary:£28,000 to £37,500 DOE Location: Derby, minimum of 3-4 days in the office per week
A well-established railway electrical services provider is looking to appoint a Junior Electrical Design Engineer / CAD Technician to join its growing in-house design team based in Derby.
This role has been deliberately designed to suit two profiles: a Junior Engineer at the early stages of their career, or an experienced CAD Technician who wants to specialise in rail and develop their technical knowledge. You will work closely with senior engineers on live rail projects, contributing to the delivery of LV electrical and communications designs for stations and trackside environments, while receiving hands-on mentorship and structured development.
Essential skills & experience
Experience producing 2D technical drawings using CAD software, ideally Bentley MicroStation Strong attention to detail and a methodical approach to technical work Genuine interest in rail engineering Prior experience creating low voltage electrical designs or drawings Ability to work from the Derby office to support learning and collaboration Good communication skills and a positive, team-oriented attitude Essential for Junior Engineer applicants
Degree or relevant qualification in Electrical Engineering or a related discipline Basic understanding of electrical engineering principles and willingness to learn industry standards Minimum 1 year of low voltage electrical design experience Essential for CAD Technician applicants
Strong CAD capability with confidence producing accurate technical drawings Interest in understanding the engineering intent behind designs MicroStation experience Previous experience working in a ProjectWise environment is highly advantageous Desirable skills
Exposure to Network Rail standards and procedures Experience working on rail, infrastructure or engineering projects Willingness to develop skills in design calculations and technical documentation This is an excellent opportunity to join a supportive rail design team that is committed to developing talent.
