Revolutionize global tax strategy
Provide critical financial guidance and compliance support for AWS's international operations. Serve as the key strategic partner helping the business track and manage its growing VAT receivables and driving solutions to scale VAT refund requests in complex countries.
Act as the critical link between AWS's global business operations and tax compliance, leveraging expertise to navigate intricate international tax landscapes. Use strategic insights to mitigate the cost that VAT leakage represents, enabling the business to use the cash to continue expanding globally.
Key job responsibilities
End-to-end ownership and management of material VAT/GST cash recovery in complex countries. Work with regional/in country compliance specialists to solve ongoing challenges with respect to pending VAT/GST refunds
Work with VAT/GST compliance and planning teams to document a refund ‘standard operating procedure’ across all ‘challenging’ VAT/GST jurisdictions
Ensure all refunds mitigate any VAT leakage to maximize cash benefit to business
Deliver improved VAT/GST cash refund timelines in targeted countries
Work with partner teams across tax, accounting, legal and FinOps to ensure a robust ‘refund readiness’ process is in place with respect to known VAT refund audit data requests from tax authorities
Maintain comprehensive global VAT receivables register and track aging of receivables
Document all efforts and actions taken by teams to obtain VAT refunds globally
Prepare detailed status reports on VAT refund initiatives by region (Americas, APAC, EMEA)
Maintain audit trail of correspondence with tax authorities
Create and update process documentation for
Track key milestones and deadlines for refund applications
Collaborate with accounting teams to reconcile VAT receivable balances quarterly
Work with tax compliance teams to validate receivable amounts and classifications
Partner with tax planning teams to assess recoverability and timing expectations
Update financial systems with current VAT receivable positions
Prepare quarter-over-quarter variance analysis and explanations
Coordinate with regional tax teams on refund claim preparation and submission
Interface with accounting teams on GL reconciliations and journal entries
Support tax compliance teams with documentation requirements
Establish KPIs and metrics to measure refund progress
Develop action plans to accelerate delayed refunds
Identify opportunities to streamline VAT refund processes
Implement controls to prevent future receivables accumulation
Key deliverables will include monthly VAT receivables and payables dashboard, quarterly reconciliation reports with accounting and tax teams, quarterly summary of refund achievements and outstanding balances, and risk assessment reports for aged receivables.

Basic Qualifications
Knowledge of Microsoft Office products and applications at an advanced level
Experience working in a large public accounting firm or multi-national corporate tax department
Experience researching indirect tax issues including taxability of products and services
Bachelor's degree in accounting, information systems, finance, or equivalent
Preferred Qualifications
LL.M. (Taxation)
Experience in supporting audit defense
