HR Officer and Assistant to the Bursar & Clerk to the Governors
Location: North London (PLEASE APPLY ONLY IF YOU ARE BASED IN NORTH LONDON AREA, CLOSE PROXIMITY TO NW5 2QD)
Full-Time | Permanent | 5 DAYS ONSITE | 8.00am - 4.30pm, Monday to Friday

The Role
This is a pivotal role within the support team of a highly successful and busy school. Working as the second member of the HR function, supporting over 200 staff, and acting as the sole assistant to the Bursar. This individual will play a critical role in ensuring the smooth and effective operation of the school.
This position is ideally suited to a proactive, highly organised administrator with excellent interpersonal skills, strong attention to detail, and the confidence to work across HR, senior leadership support, and governance. The role offers variety, responsibility, and the opportunity to contribute meaningfully to the life and success of the school.
Job Purpose
- To provide high-quality administrative support to the Head of HR, ensuring the efficient day-to-day operation of the HR function
- To deliver effective and confidential support to the Bursar across all aspects of their role
- To support school governance through acting as Clerk to the Governors
Key Responsibilities
Human Resources
- Support the Head of HR in delivering a professional and compliant HR service
- Provide end-to-end administrative support for recruitment, including:
- Placing adverts
- Managing applications
- Preparing interview schedules
- Issuing references and offers
- Draft offer letters and contracts for review
- Maintain accurate and up-to-date staff records and HR systems
- Record and monitor staff absence data
- Maintain the Single Central Register, ensuring full compliance with statutory requirements
- Undertake recruitment and vetting checks in line with safeguarding legislation
- Deputise for the Head of HR when required, in consultation with the Bursar
Assistant to the Bursar
The Bursar is responsible for the school's non-teaching operations, including finance, estates, IT, catering, administration, and HR.
Key duties include:
- Comprehensive administrative and diary support
- Organising meetings and managing correspondence
- Handling incoming telephone enquiries
- Maintaining departmental records
- Coordinating bursary (financial support) applications and related correspondence
- Maintaining bursary records and liaising with the Accounts Department
- Completing the Annual School Census in collaboration with Admissions
- Processing school fees insurance claims and supporting parent enquiries
Governance (Clerk to the Governors)
The Governors provide strategic oversight and meet regularly as a Board and in sub-committees.
Responsibilities include:
- Managing the Governors' annual calendar
- Organising meetings and preparing agendas and papers
- Taking accurate, high-quality minutes
- Maintaining governance records and documentation
- Supporting Governor recruitment, induction, and vetting
- Arranging Governor training and processing expenses
- Acting as the first point of contact for Governor queries
- Maintaining the Governors' Handbook
Requirements:
- Office-based administrative experience.
- Experience working in a school environment or education sector (Desirable)
- Essential to understanding of safeguarding and child protection responsibilities.
- Degree-level qualification or CIPD Level 3 (or above)
- Experience managing multiple deadlines
- Excellent interpersonal and communication skills
- Proficiency with Microsoft and Google applications
