Head of PIM Engineering at Railpen

A newly created opportunity to join the PIM (Pension Investment Management) team as the Head of PIM Engineering. This is a permanent role based in our London office (hybrid working).

Railpen is responsible for the safekeeping and investment of around £34 billion in assets and the administration of several pension schemes, including the Railways Pension Scheme, one of the UK's largest and longest established pension funds. Our heritage gives us our name and unique outlook.

The role

As the Head of PIM Engineering you will be responsible for building and maintaining stable and scalable investment and client focused systems and applications that enhance decision making for the PIM business. You will ensure the technology platform is aligned with the business technology strategy and actively communicate, educate and champion technology direction and decisions to the wider team.

Responsibilities

Lead a high‑performing engineering team, focusing on leadership rather than hands‑on development or coding.

Qualifications

• Significant demonstrable experience in leading large-scale, complex, distributed application development of cloud-native solutions.
• Proficiency in multiple languages (C#, Python, Typescript, SQL, etc.) and strong knowledge of software design and architectural concepts (event-driven architecture, microservices, domain-driven design, SOLID, DRY, SoC, etc.).
• Familiarity with frameworks such as Node.js, Angular, APIs such as SOAP and REST, and containerization (Docker).
• Industry background in highly regulated, compliant, certified financial services with knowledge of ISO27001, cybersecurity, secure software development life cycles.
• Experience of Agile, Waterfall and hybrid approaches to delivering across the entire SDLC, skilled at managing agile ceremonies and practices.
• Proven experience leading cross‑functional teams, mentoring growth and learning, navigating uncertainty and building trusted collaborative relationships with senior stakeholders.
