Role Title - Head of Construction Design Location - Flexible base location (with national travel required) Our construction team is undergoing a significant transformation with a focus on insourcing and in‑house development across our project portfolio. As part of the RM Engineering family, we have a mission to design, develop and deploy future‑ready, innovative solutions across our property, automation and maintenance teams. About the role As Head of Construction Design, you'll lead and develop a multidisciplinary team while steering all design activity across our construction and refurbishment projects. You'll put in place the technical standards, processes and governance that keep our designs safe, compliant and well‑coordinated, ensuring everything we deliver is right first time. You'll work closely with Programme and Project Managers, Engineering, Commercial and Operations teams to make sure design outputs support project goals, budget constraints and programme timelines. You'll also champion digital design, manage BIM and the Common Data Environment, and play a key role in design risk management and Building Safety Act compliance. You'll be the organisation's senior technical voice on construction design matters, providing assurance, advising on investment decisions and helping drive value engineering and whole life performance. Please note this is a national role with a flexible base location. Regular travel and site visits form part of the role. A full UK driving licence is required. Skills & Experience
Strong leadership skills with experience managing multidisciplinary design teams. Expert understanding of design principles across architecture, building services, structural engineering, surveying and BIM. Solid working knowledge of UK Building Regulations, planning, fire safety and sustainability standards. Proven experience in design governance, technical assurance and multidisciplinary coordination. Good commercial awareness with the ability to influence cost plans and support value engineering. Strong grasp of BIM, CDE systems and ISO 19650 processes. Confident communicator able to work effectively with senior leaders, contractors, consultants and statutory bodies. Skilled at problem solving, risk assessment and challenging noncompliant or inefficient design proposals. Able to manage multiple projects and maintain high technical standards under pressure. Thorough understanding of CDM 2015, design risk management and Building Safety legislation.
Qualifications
Degree in a relevant discipline (Architecture, Building Services, Structural Engineering, Surveying) is desirable. Chartered status (RIBA, CIBSE, ICE, CIOB, RICS, CIAT) desirable but not essential. BIM/digital construction training and NEBOSH (or equivalent H&S qualification) an advantage. CSCS card or H&S test pass required.
