UCLH is proud of the work we do with cancer patients. We are the specialist surgery centre for patients undergoing major head and neck surgery in north and northeast London, and we are one of only two centres in the UK offering Proton Beam Therapy to Head and Neck patients. We provide advanced treatments including radioiodine and radiotherapy, and we have a strong oncology team with an active trial portfolio and palliative care.

Role Overview

The Head and Neck and Thyroid Cancer Clinical Nurse Specialist will provide holistic care and support to patients and their families affected by head and neck and thyroid cancer. He/she will provide specialist nursing advice and care throughout the patient pathway from suspected cancer and diagnosis, during treatment often multimodality while acting as the patient’s key worker and advocate through their cancer journey. You will be part of the Head and Neck and Thyroid Clinical Nurse Specialist team, which is led by the Lead CNS, and comprises Macmillan CNSs, an Enhanced Recovery CNS and a Macmillan Cancer Support Worker.

Key Responsibilities

  • Act as the patient’s key worker, advocate and main point of contact throughout the cancer journey.
  • Provide specialist nursing advice and support in an interdisciplinary setting and participate in multidisciplinary team decision‑making.
  • Develop and contribute to service development, education, and teaching initiatives.
  • Manage altered airway, complex wound, and enteral feeding care in a hospital and community setting.
  • Ensure high‑quality, patient‑centred care through effective communication and continuous quality improvement.

Qualifications & Skills

  • Band 7 Clinical Nurse Specialist grade or equivalent clinical experience.
  • Strong knowledge of head and neck and thyroid oncology nursing, including airway, wound, and nutritional management.
  • Excellent communication, teaching, and education skills.
  • Commitment to delivering high‑quality patient care and continuous improvement.
